🚨 Today's King's Speech announced new legislation, the ‘Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill’. This bill rightly proposes measures to tackle smugglers, address the asylum backlog and make decision making more efficient. But this needs to be accompanied by introducing new safe routes. The causes of displacement aren't going away, so an approach based on deterrence alone cannot work. And we must ensure that the debate around this legislation is centered on compassion, so displaced people feel welcomed, and aren't presented as a threat. We hope that this legislation is a step towards an asylum system that's fair, compassionate and efficient - and one that recognises the legal right to asylum. My dear friends Sisters JoAnn Persch and Pat Murphy have been working with immigrants and their families for decades, and in the last year and a half, they’ve worked tirelessly to welcome and help the over 25,000 asylum seekers who’ve come to Chicago from Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua, and elsewhere. The fight for immigrants’ rights is not for the weary—Congress has failed to act on immigration for nearly 40 years. But when we work in coalitions to enact bold policies, we can: 1) Call on the federal government to reform its racist, exclusionary requirements for asylum; 2) Demand Congress pass budgetary measures to increase funding for legal aid services to assist all immigrant populations with challenging paperwork; 3) Encourage the White House to nominate and seat hundreds of immigration judges to reduce the 3,000,000 immigration case backlog; and 4) Work with Congress and FEMA to provide supplemental funding to cities as they operate dozens of shelters for new arrivals.
