I am not doing architecture, am I? Let me share a short story. During college, a renowned architect from Chennai came to review our work, and it was finally my turn. I walked into the room, unrolled my sheets, and began explaining my project. As a designer, I had always played it safe, avoiding curves or angular walls in my designs. Why? I simply didn't like them and didn’t see a way to use them without a clear purpose. My focus was always on functional design rather than creating extravagant structures. I’ll admit, I wasn’t the best at design, but I always gave it my all. After presenting my work, I eagerly awaited his feedback. To my shock, instead of commenting on my design, he asked, "So, after completing architecture, you'll get married, right?" At the time, my friends and I laughed it off. But now, when I think back on it, I can’t help but wonder why he made such a comment. In just ten minutes, he seemed to have formed an opinion about my life and future. Why did he feel the need to comment on my personal life and career path? Was he implying that I wouldn’t continue in architecture? Really? So, what am I doing now? I’m an architectural storyteller. I write about interior design. I ghostwrite for architects. And I say that with pride. I’m still very much involved in architecture. Is practicing architecture the only way to be an architect? Some people express their ideas through sketches; I express mine through words. What about architectural photography? What about urban planning or landscape design? I may not be designing buildings, but I’m still very much a part of the architectural world. While my experience with that architect was a minor setback, it’s a reminder that there are people in this industry who hold outdated and harmful views. I’ve seen architects who make life miserable for the younger generation by using abusive language. As I always say, we all work for different reasons—money, passion, and so much more. So, to those who say I’m not a real architect, I say: The best architects don’t just design buildings; they create experiences. And mine is a unique one!
