Being a photographer has been invaluable to me as an architect. I only photograph people, and when I work as a photographer, building a bond, or connection with a person is the key to creating any sort of portrait that can stand with any level of respect for who they are. Great light is never perfect light. Technical skill will only take you so far. The shot is only about one single thing -- the moment when someone lets you see them truthfully. That moment can only be found in the right space, so understanding how space, and all it's attributes affect a person is something essential to my work. Now as an architect, it's still a critical element, and it's simply something that can't be taught in school. Sometimes architectural photography requires a very technical visual solution, but that doesn't mean it has to be boring. If your client needs you to adequately explain in a photograph what they want to communicate, you have to find a way to do it so that is always attractive to the observer. Representing a construction job like this in an image may require a certain point of view to portray a specific intervention that your client wants to highlight. Even so, you don't have to portray that specific aspect of a building as if you were addressing only a specific audience that will be able to appreciate it – architects, engineers… –. You have to propose a frame that is attractive to any type of viewer. I had to photograph the building that my client had built and especially the curtain walls, but I didn't want to do it as if it were for a machinery or tool catalogue: I wanted to give my image an elegant visual presence that would highlight my client's work –and mine. That's why I looked for a point of view that reminded me of Frank Lloyd Wright's Kaufmann House, the incredibly beautiful Fallingwater. I thought that if I did it this way I could attract the curiosity and the looks of many different observers… and so it happened. The last thing we architectural photographers want is to bore the viewers of our pictures. That's why we must never ever leave them indifferent. #photography #architecture #architecturalphotography

The Secret Life of Buildings: Unveiling Fascinating Facts We’ve all seen the famous black and white “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” photograph from 1932. There’s even been some debate about whether the photo was real because the original photographer wasn’t identified until 2003. However, it’s all absolutely genuine, with no alterations or darkroom tricks. Whilst we admire the daring of these construction workers, our highest priority is to deliver projects safely.
