Despite many companies making public commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion (#DEI), the reality is that most businesses still struggle to close their diversity gaps. A hyper-focus on degrees and exclusive hiring practices often leaves little opportunity for non-traditional applicants to get their foot in the door. How can companies re-evaluate their hiring practices and make meaningful changes to create a more inclusive workforce? ARE WE TRULY EMBRACING DIVERSITY OR JUST PAYING LIP SERVICE? As someone from a minority background, I've always been passionate about advocating for diversity's positive impact on the workforce. Last week, we had a fascinating conversation as a group with an industry leader on the topic. Diverse teams with varied perspectives tend to make better investment decisions and foster more significant innovation. Research, such as that from Scott Page, highlights the "diversity bonus," showing that diverse teams outperform homogeneous ones in tackling complex tasks. Moving beyond simply focusing on identity diversity and striving for cognitive diversity within teams is essential. Greater transparency around compensation and negotiation is needed to address gender biases. An example was shared about a company that made incorrect assumptions regarding women on maternity leave, underlining the importance of challenging such biases. To avoid such pitfalls, boards and leaders must engage actively with and understand their organisation's culture. Recruiters play a crucial role in promoting DEI. By being transparent about roles and compensation, recruiters build trust with candidates. Recruiters should also continue to challenge clients on the importance of DEI, even when it isn't a stated priority, as it leads to better decision-making. Facilitating diverse candidate pools and pushing back against uniform shortlists are key actions recruiters can take to drive progress. It's frustrating that we're still discussing the need for diversity, especially as DEI seems to be fading from the conversation. Let's hope we don't have to wait for economic changes before we see a renewed focus on cognitive diversity in hiring. #DiversityMatters #EquityAndInclusion #CognitiveDiversity #BreakTheGlassCeiling #InclusiveWorkplace #SustainableFinance #DiversityInHiring Neil Farrell Tatiana Dupont Stephanie Thompson Matt Baty Farrell Associates | Certified B Corp™
