Leaders cannot fix company culture. There, I said it. And that’s OK. In fact, it’s to be expected. Why? Because company cultures aren’t controlled by leaders! Company cultures, like the culture of any society, big or small, develop naturally, over time. In companies, they develop first through a series of imperfect hiring and structural decisions made by imperfect, albeit well-intentioned individuals that we call “organizational leaders” with understandably imperfect understandings of how culture will develop. These compounding imperfections lead to cultures that drift over days, weeks, months, and years from the rosy visions of organizations being “Collaborative, Agile, and Fun” or “Sustainable, Hardworking, and Inclusive” or any other combination of meaningful but poorly reinforced buzzwords. Before long, time and time again, leaders are left scratching their heads it seems, grasping at straws to solve their culture problems, and that’s where they go wrong: Leaders don’t define company culture; employees do. Leaders, particularly good leaders, don’t just hire soldiers to execute explicit orders. They hire independent thinkers, decision makers, and problem solvers. They hire US. Let’s share the burden of cultural blame with our leaders and take ownership for our piece of the puzzle. Let’s embrace our roles in changing organizational culture from within, treating our teammates the way we want them to treat us and expecting fair treatment in return. Let’s lead from the middle and steer the natural growth of culture in the directions that we want with each decision we make day-to-day. Let’s own our company cultures. After all, we’re the ones who have to live in them. Please feel free to share with any friends and colleagues who might appreciate this perspective, and I encourage you to subscribe for more content to come as life marches on. https://lnkd.in/gymQehfk #leadership #culture #poetry #ownership #changeagency
