I was a buyer for a well known and highly respected retailer. I expected that I'd spend my entire career at that company... During a meeting with colleagues, it was mentioned that one of our vendors was looking for a new Account Manager. Outside sales? I wasn't sure that was me. The position just happened to be with my favorite brand, and probably the ONLY brand that would take me away from a job I really loved, a team that was awesome, and where I'd gotten promoted several times. But when I heard the news. I had butterflies in my stomach. I couldn't think of much else during a day full of meetings. I slipped away to make a call to express my interest. I drove three hours from Portland to Seattle for the interview. I got the job. It was the first of several career pivots and a career trajectory that I have no regrets about even with a few lay-offs and some toxic managers. I can quite literally say that I wouldn't be doing what I am now if I hadn't made the decision to go for it that day. Lessons :: >> Stay open to possibilities. >> When a door opens, go thru it. >> One decision can change everything. No matter what happens, the good is there when you look for it. Always for you, Elissa #CareerPivot #Leadership #Management #StrategicElissa

I had no guarantees about getting the job, I worked in retail sales but had no outside sales experience I had LOTS of transferable skills. I bet you, do to! Ready to make your career pivot but not sure how to leverage your transferable skills... We need to talk :)

Too many of us learn the hard way that we have to take responsibility for our own career. It would be great if our company did it, putting us in places to grow and add more value. The vast majority aren't going to do it. It would be great if our manager helped in the process, using their knowledge to see where our best opportunities are in the field, either inside or outside of the company. The vast majority aren't going to do it. So we have to figure it out, finding great mentors, having conversations with others that are successful, doing our homework and learning wherever we can. The good news is that the vast majority of people early in their careers haven't figured that out yet, so if you can do it, you'll be way ahead of the competition.

Elissa, your story is truly inspiring and a testament to the power of seizing opportunities. It's amazing how a seemingly small decision can lead to such profound changes in our lives and careers. I'm curious, what advice would you give to someone who's at a crossroads in their career and contemplating a major change like you did?
