January is Alzheimer Awareness Month in Canada. Are you familiar with the Canadian Charter of Rights for People with Dementia? Individuals facing dementia share the same human rights as all of us, including the autonomy to manage their own lives. Unfortunately, stigma and discrimination can cast a shadow on their diagnosis, leading to assumptions and decisions made on their behalf. More than 421,000 Australians are living with dementia, and a further 1.6 million are involved in their care. January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month Most of us know someone with Alzheimer's or dementia, and it can feel like there’s nothing we can do to help. The Alzheimer's Society of Canada has five things we can do to support Alzheimer's Awareness in Canada: 1. Help spread the word. You can download a Community Toolkit from their site that highlights First Link® (a program that offers support and information). 2. Connect with your local Society. Ours is the Alberta and Northwest Territories Society. 3. Learn more about dementia. 4. Listen to the stories of people with lived experience. 5.
