Whether you're parent of a student with a disability or work with them, you must know the facts about the college environment so that you can prepare your student(s) for it. Too many people get bad information or make assumptions, leaving students without the skills they need to make a smooth college transition. Most students who register for accommodations at college will be found eligible and (depending upon their requests) be approved for the accommodations they seek. However, this sometimes won't be the case. "...there is no font that has ever been found to make learning to read any easier or more effective." I just saw that a book publisher is using a specific font in attempt to help people with dyslexia. This is well-intentioned, but while reading involves vision, it is a language-based skill. In this post, reading expert Timothy Shanahan reviews the limited research on special fonts that claim to help students with #Dyslexia. Before your student asks for this as an accommodation, get the facts.

In the J3wish ghetto in Rome this summer, we saw these stolpersteines (stumbling stones) in front of the homes from which J3ws were torn (after being imprisoned there) for transportation to death camps. They're intended to remind people of the horrors that bigotry can bring about. I would much rather talk to you about preparing students with disabilities for college - my favorite topic. But recent events keep bringing me back to what it felt like standing there & in other places that have memorialized these horrors in this way. I apologize for using symbols to spell certain words & names here, but I know trolls & bots search for these terms so they can harass people. I grew up in the 70s & 80s, not that long after the horrors of the Holocaust were revealed. I felt lucky my family had made it here before WWII. At the time, I didn't know how lucky we were, given that the U.S. government didn't do what it could to rescue J3ws even when they knew what was happening in Europe (https://lnkd.in/eWBwR_fV) It starts with a lie told for political benefit – the like the one V@nce admitted he made up about immigrants (https://lnkd.in/ePDSYpXy) & Tr*mp repeated it. They're happy to stoke violence & don't care who is harmed by it. Immigrants are part of what makes this country great - in so many ways. And they also benefit the economy. Know who knows this? Business owners who hire them. Even the conservative Cato Institute agrees: https://lnkd.in/ePjC5KHH On visits to the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Museum of African American History & Culture & the Museum of Chinese in America in NYC, you can see what happens when a dominant group demonizes a marginalizes one for their own political & economic benefit. An example - "When white labor began to organize for higher wages, American capitalists turned to Chinese workers...Labor organizers used ideas of white supremacy to rally the working class...White workers branded the Chinese at as the enemy, accusing them of stealing jobs and being unfit for citizenship." Sound familiar? Know anyone who says they don’t care about bigotry (or they do but they are more concerned about the economy)? One estimate puts the cost of Tr*mp's mass deportation plan (both the literal cost & the economic damage it will do) at at least $315 billion: https://lnkd.in/eiW26X7p For a historical example – the Indian Removal Act cost 10x the initial estimates: https://lnkd.in/ej8YbFea We must stand up to the lies & the bigotry & vote against those who demonize others for their own gain.
