Stoked to finally see this study in print. We all know that vegetation can help stabilize slopes, but knowing to what degree (and applying this knowledge to large-scale landslide susceptibility assessments) can be ridiculously challenging. We were able to fine-tune a GIS method for converting lidar-derived vegetation to a root strength index (not the most detailed answer, but VERY expedient and scalable). The cool thing? Over 75% of eastern Kentucky landslides triggered by a 2022 storm can be explained, at least in part, by a low root strength index. The really cool thing? This work can be adapted and applied to other landslide-prone regions and, hopefully, prove valuable in narrowing down slopes likely to fail in the future. Catastrophic storms that initiate slides are, apparently, not going away any time soon. #Wildfire season is upon us, and its impact is felt year after year. Satellite imagery and analytics offer critical support in understanding and managing these events. The image provided showcases a before and after view of California's #MosquitoFire. Optical satellite imagery, as shown in the image, provides a clear view of landscapes before and after wildfires. The top-left quadrant shows a visual representation of the area before the fire, while the bottom-left quadrant displays the same area after the fire. This imagery helps in assessing immediate damage and planning response efforts. Before a wildfire, Land Cover Maps by Impact Observatory (top-right quadrant) are essential in identifying various vegetation types and understanding fuel loads. These maps help in risk assessment and resource allocation, allowing for better-preparedness measures. After a wildfire, infrared imaging (bottom-right quadrant) becomes vital in analyzing fire scars. This type of imaging detects burned areas and assesses burn severity by distinguishing between different levels of vegetation damage. Such information is crucial for post-fire recovery and rehabilitation efforts. #Analytics applied to these satellite images further enhance our understanding. Land cover analysis provides detailed information on vegetation types, aiding in the identification of high-risk areas. How AI and Satellite Technology Are Enhancing Wildfire Detection in the Bay Area & Hawaii Bay Area companies are harnessing advanced technology to combat wildfires, with Google leading the charge through its FireSat program. This initiative, developed in collaboration with satellite experts and nonprofits, uses new satellites to detect and track wildfires as small as a classroom within 20 minutes. Seth Schalet, CEO of the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council, noted a partnership with OroraTech to merge fire science and traditional firefighting. AI-based smoke sensors, like the N5 Sensors installed in Stanford and Palo Alto, help differentiate between barbecues and wildfires by analyzing unique fire compositions. Once a fire is detected, alerts are sent to fire agencies. The Palo Alto Fire Department is actively collaborating with N5 Sensor technology to enhance wildfire detection efforts. Early fire alerts are crucial, as timely notifications allow fire crews to respond more quickly and effectively. The South Bay now has the largest installation of these sensors in the continental U.S., reflecting the growing awareness of the importance of early detection in preventing catastrophic wildfires. With 80 sensors across the Hawaiian Islands and the largest continental U.S. installation in South Bay, these advancements highlight the growing understanding of the need for timely notifications in wildfire emergencies.

Data Dazzle: 100-year Flood #Watershed Analysis This analysis is a 3D simulation of placing barriers (in yellow) to protect structures (in red) downstream from 100-year flooding events in areas impacted by the Hermit’s Peak #Wildfire in New Mexico. Depth levels progress from orange to blue. These simulations are generated using high-resolution LiDAR data in combination with Teren's proprietary climate, soil, vegetation and hydrology models that were rapidly processed and analyzed in the Terescale high-performance computing engine.
