The Data Act enables users of connected products (e.g. connected cars, medical and fitness devices, industrial or agricultural machinery) and related services (i.e. anything that would make a connected product behave in a specific manner, such as an app to adjust the brightness of lights, or to regulate the temperature of a fridge) to access the data that they co-create by using the connected products/related services. “Alexa, light on” – that's the first thing I say when I enter my home. It got me thinking about the protocols that IoT devices use. Unlike our backend applications, IoT devices operate on different protocols, and one of the key protocols is MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport). MQTT is a lightweight messaging protocol designed to connect and interact with millions of devices seamlessly. MQTT is based on TCP. Why MQTT? - Lightweight and Efficient: Optimized for low-bandwidth, high-latency, or unreliable networks, making it ideal for devices with limited resources. - Publish/Subscribe Model: Ensures scalable, real-time communication by decoupling message producers (publishers) from consumers (subscribers). - Versatile and Flexible: Used in various applications, from home automation and industrial IoT to mobile messaging. How Does MQTT Work? 1. Broker: Manages message distribution between clients. 2. Clients: Devices that publish or subscribe to messages via topics. 3. Topics: Hierarchical strings used to filter messages.
