This week I visited the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf. It a huge fair with 16 halls about Caravans, Campers, RVs and everything that surrounds the lifestyle.
I went to the fair to explore the advancement of aerodynamics on these vehicles and see if I could contribute to improve their efficiency.
Knowing what Aerows engineering could provide to this segment, I prepared for the event by doing a small CFD study (see flyer attached).
The reason for the study is the increased popularity of electric cars. Their range is of large importance and adding a caravan reduces this by more than half (with my geometry 63% at a steady 90 km/h).
With aerodynamic methods commonly used on trucks and cars, we could reduce the impact of the caravan drag force. It would result in longer range and therefor less stops in between charging.
A first loop of optimization on the general shape regained 60% of range compared to the base trailer.
After talking to people at the fair, I was surprised to find that aerodynamics does not seem to be a priority in the industry.
I am convinced that there is great potential to improve aerodynamics in this industry, so if you are working in development of caravans or campers and interested in exploring this topic, get in touch and we could have a great impact together.
