Representation in mental healthcare is so important for these reasons. 💔 The Real Cost of Seeking Help 💔 The topic of therapy fees hits close to home for me. Private pay therapists, who refuse to work with insurance companies, charge hundreds of dollars per session lasting a mere 45 minutes—not even a full hour. Perhaps some mental health clinics are paying their therapists too little, leading to high turnover once therapists gain experience. Are the rates insurance companies pay for therapy too low? Who determines the true price of therapy? I also wonder why in-demand therapists are not charging $1000 or more per session, as their desperate clients would surely pay whatever amount of money they ask. Since their time is inherently unquantifiable in monetary terms, who determined that each session should cost a few hundred dollars? Therapy isn't just about talking; it's a lifeline during tough times. I've seen firsthand the sacrifices friends and loved ones make just to afford a session—taking on extra work, cutting back on essentials, and feeling the strain of financial pressure. I refer to these fees as "blood money", because it highlights the painful reality that seeking help shouldn't come with such a steep price tag. It's heart-wrenching to witness individuals battling their inner demons also wrestle with financial burdens just to access the support they desperately need. Many of these clients take on degrading jobs to earn the money they then use to pay for therapy. Therapy isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for many. It's about investing in mental well-being, finding strength, and overcoming challenges with professional guidance. Every dollar spent on therapy represents a commitment to healing and survival, not just a financial transaction. Let's bring awareness to the personal toll of therapy costs and advocate for more accessible mental health care solutions. Being a caregiver can be one of the most stressful times in a person's life. Why does mental health have to be justified as a means to better physical health? Rachel Conrad, M.D. brought this point up in a conversation the other day, and I've been chewing on it ever since. I'm guilty of using this as part of my "pay therapists more" argument when it comes to reimbursement rates. The argument sounds like this: "Providing mental health care means people take better care of themselves, attend doctor's appointments, take their meds, and exercise. People who get therapy cost their insurance companies less overall." But I would never expect a cardiologist to justify their specialty that way- "People who get heart surgery are more likely to take their meds and exercise." Because we assume that spending on heart health doesn't need to be justified - it's the purpose of insurance. So why do I feel the need to justify spending on mental health as a means to lower costs for payors? Mental health deserves better rates because MENTAL HEALTH IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS ANY OTHER COMPONENT OF HUMAN HEALTH. #mentalhealth #therapy #therapists

We're thrilled to announce the debut of our latest brief on parity in mental health coverage, shedding light on the intersection of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) and insurance accessibility. In the midst of our nation's escalating behavioral and mental health crisis, PAT has shown promising clinical efficacy data and ongoing research at prestigious institutions nationwide. Yet, for these groundbreaking treatments to reach those in need, affordability and insurance coverage are paramount. Our paper delves into the basics of PAT and the protections offered by the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), ensuring equitable access for all patients. It also delivers a forward-looking perspective on how these principles can be incorporated into a holistic spectrum of care to democratize access to these potentially life-changing therapies. We urge providers and payers to familiarize themselves with these requirements, paving the way for PAT to be readily available upon FDA approval. Mental Health America has just published their 2024 report on the State of Mental Health in America. I am incredibly disappointed and angry to see that Texas ranks last (behind every other state and the District of Columbia) for access to care, which includes "how much access to mental health care exists within a state, [including] access to insurance, access to treatment, quality and cost of insurance, access to special education, and mental health workforce availability."
