PRODUCT LAUNCH!!   PRF Composite Materials is excited to announce the launch of RP570 FR REEPREG, presented today at RECOMP 2024: Reuse and Recycling of Composites.   Developed for aircraft interior components, RP570 FR REEPREG is a fire-retardant eXpress cure prepreg material made with recycled carbon fibre nonwoven mat and has a complete processing time of 5 minutes at 160°C. This innovative material combines REEPREG’s class-leading handleability with PRF’s eXpress cure technology and provides a fire-retardant carbon prepreg material that reduces landfill waste, improves circularity, and is highly suited to high volume manufacturing (HVM).   Robert Burnell, CEO and Head of Product Development at PRF comments: “RP570 FR REEPREG has been developed specifically with lightweighting in mind, looking at enabling recycled composite materials to be used in aircraft interior programs and other applications requiring FST properties and HVM. Through significant investment in R&D, we have developed a special methodology of impregnation to ensure that once prepregged, REEPREG is easy to handle and press from a flat sheet into a 3D shape. A first for me, I was privileged to sit on a panel at Circular Steel 2024 today. Some really challenging questions and incitefull observations from fellow panel members. I attended last year and I felt the vibe this year was different. Things are moving fast. We are now talking not about how to make steel reuse happen, but how to scale up steel reuse. This is good. We are also discussing when steel reuse is appropriate, and, importantly, when it is not. There is a general consensus that designs should be lean, and incorporate reused steel where, and only where, it can be used efficiently. If it's not efficient leave it for someone else to use. A good rule of thumb is that members should be working at least at 70 - 75% of their capacity, and preferably much higher. The final point I took from today is that we all need to push the agenda and in particular promote more steel to go into the reuse supply chain. Let's do it! #circulareconomy, Civic Engineers

A couple days of conferences to recap, first Circular Steel 2024. This conference brought together steel reuse experts and enthusiasts from the whole value chain, to talk about everything from setting the brief to lessons learned. The main takeaways for me were: 1. We (designers) need to not be too prescriptive when matching stock. Reused steel can have redundant fittings or little holes in it which make no difference to capacity but if they're in exactly the wrong place can make the element unsuitable for its intended use. Plus, putting reused steel through automated fabrication lines is risky so we need to leave it up to stockholders and fabricators to do final matching. 2. We've made huge progress! Two years ago we had perhaps one case study and this was being discussed mainly as a hypothetically good idea, and now, loads of case studies on site with significant reused tonnages. We didn't make enough of a fuss of all these successes! Well done Steve Gilchrist for organising it all.
