Any brand entering the ‘mass market’ segment in 2024 is extremely brave or has very deep pockets. To step into the bloody arena in the 200,000 RMB to 300,000 RMB area is a real test of a manufacturer's ability to appeal to a wider consumer base. Tonight NIO unveiled their first affordable brand, called ‘ONVO’ or 'On Voyage' and you will have seen Li Bin on stage presenting this car - the very car I got invited to take a look around over the weekend. You can find out my thoughts in the video below, but if you could get a car with NIO’s level of luxury, quality and smart driving ability but for even less money, would you be attracted to it? - It also begs the question - will this bring mass market success to NIO? Elliot Richards Chinese models are proving to be far better quality than many expected. They are also in production in 2024, not some launch date in 2026 / 2027. The budget end of the market is less brand conscious and more brand value. ONVO and others could do well in a segment short of luxury and value.
