So, we shut the Blast Furnaces down in the UK and introduce EAF's to produce "Green Steel". When I worked in the melting shop many years ago, we had 3 EAF's, at the time I think the largest transformer was 110 MVA Aldwarke Melting shop, where I worked, was a fraction of the size of Port Talbot and Scunthorpe. The question therefore is, how will one EAF provide enough molten steel for Port Talbot and Scunthorpe respectively ? Also, as the article say's, we have the highest electricty prices in the world. Something doesn't add up ! P.S. 20/9/24 - TATA open India's largest blast furnace !

The UK’s steel industry is struggling to compete with European competitors because of the high cost of domestic electricity, a trade body has warned. The sector’s energy use is already equivalent to around 800,000 homes, but decarbonisation efforts will lead many producers to switch away from blast furnaces to using electric arc furnaces instead. Just a single electric arc furnace uses about 0.5MWh of electricity per tonne of steel – mass roll-out of the technology is therefore expected to double the sector’s electricity usage. 🌍🔋 UK Steel: Electrification, Emissions, and International Competitiveness The UK steel industry is transitioning to full electrification with Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs), aiming for a 2% reduction in national greenhouse gas emissions and greater use of domestic steel scrap. This shift will bring in substantial private investment and enhance sustainability, with EAFs emitting significantly less than traditional methods. However, high UK electricity costs—much higher than in Germany and France—threaten profitability and competitiveness. In an industry with narrow margins and fierce international competition, where 40% of steel crosses borders, these costs hinder the ability to compete globally. Don’t take chances when it comes to containing hydrogen onboard vehicles. Preventing leakage is an obvious requirement of all hydrogen tanks. Conversely, routine maintenance or advertising expenses, which are meant for immediate business purposes, would be revenue expenditure.
