Triple finger revascularization in a work related crushing trauma. A complex surgery lasting more than 6 hours, with the microsurgical stage performed with the operating microscope, and together with my colleagues and friends Dr Emanuele Mascherpa and Dr Marta Feduzi. Bone fixation of the long fingers has been achieved with intramedullary cannulated screws; flexor repair performed with the M Tang technique (learnt during my fellowship in Zürich, thanks to Prof. Maurizio Calcagni), and vascular and nerve sutures with standard microsurgical technique. Hand rehabilitation will help us obtain the best achievable result. Refractive Lens Exchange or RLE, is a vision correction procedure that involves removing the eyes natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implant. The procedure is exactly the same as cataract surgery, except in this case the clear natural lens is removed rather than a cataract (cloudy lens). The procedure is performed purely to provide reduced dependence on glasses or contact lenses. What is one of the main complications after scoliosis surgery? Sometimes (not often) the rod breaks. But since the rod is located in scar tissue or even bone tissue, it is unlikely to cause particular problems. The situation would need to be evaluated, and the decision on whether or not to perform further surgery would have to be taken after considering the damage that the rod could cause and weighing this up against the risks of a second surgery. This is something that, in order to make an informed and conscious choice, would have to be discussed directly with the surgeon.
