At the end of 2023, Cosmos Science Magazine invited Australia's five Learned Academies to review the year that was and explore the one to come. Some key grabs are below, but I strongly encourage you to read their full statements. Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia President Richard Holden stated that his Academy’s aspirations for 2024 are ambitious and purpose-driven, especially as collaborations with government and academic bodies signal a shift toward valuing expert insights in addressing global challenges. Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering CEO Kylie Walker wants us to aim high to create the future we want, emphasising the importance of applying science and engineering to meet ever-growing global challenges. In a world facing a sharp rise in misinformation, Australian Academy of the Humanities Executive Director Inga Davis reflects on the essential role of the humanities in shaping our empathy, our ability to look holistically, and to see things from diverse perspectives other than our own. Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences President Professor Louise Baur has a vision: preventative healthcare through reducing inequity. The Australian Academy of Science President Professor Chennupati Jagadish, AC sounded the alarm on the downward trajectory of Australia's investment in R&D throughout 2023 - all while governments lean more on science for answers. Excitedly, 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of AAS and to celebrate they've set an ambitious goal: a 10-year investment plan developed with the Australian Government that reverses the decline in R&D investment and sees a cohesive and strategic approach to R&D that achieves multi-partisan support. Kudos to Marcia McNutt of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on the inaugural State of the Science address. Important, insightful, and inspiring are the first words that come to mind as I listened. Important: A sobering assessment of where U.S. science stands now in a historical context and where it will stand in the future if the status quo prevails. Insightful: An honest and data-driven assessment that put U.S. science leadership in a global context and why continued leadership is vital to our nation. Inspiring: An optimistic set of prescriptions that are actionable and empowering. https://lnkd.in/eQ4-z-if

We release today a report on ‘Models of engagement for PhDs with non-academic partners’, which offers recommendations for future-proof engineering education to tackle global challenges. This report, developed under the leadership of our Task Force Innovation, highlights evolving models of engagement between PhD candidates and non-academic partners, such as industry. We focus on how these collaborations can enhance societal engagement, drive innovation, and promote disruptive advancements across Europe. Authored by a team led by Yvonne Kinnaird from the University of Strathclyde, this report explores how partnerships between universities and non-academic entities—especially through "industrial doctorate” programs—can serve as key drivers of innovation. The recommendations outlined in the report provide a strategic roadmap for fostering stronger collaborations between universities, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and EU institutions to advance Europe’s leadership in research and innovation. Key recommendations: 🔵 To university leaders: enhance partnerships with industry to create more industrial doctorate opportunities and improve career pathways for PhD candidates. ⚪ To industry partners: provide greater financial and practical support for industrial doctorate programs and collaborate with universities to tailor research training to industry needs. 🔵 To policymakers: create supportive policies and funding mechanisms to strengthen industrial doctorate programmes and foster innovation across sectors. ⚪ To EU institutions: expand funding for industrial doctorate initiatives through programs like Horizon Europe and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, while streamlining regulations for easier collaboration between academia and industry. The purpose of the Gothenburg U-GOT KIES Centre Spring Workshop 2024 was to discuss the current trends in changing science & innovation policy, with a special focus on Europe. During the workshop, Professors Susanna Fellman, Uwe Cantner and Magnus Gulbrandsen talked, respectively, about changing science and innovation policy in Sweden, Germany and Norway. They drew both upon their scientific expertise and their societal involvements in policy. Professor Maureen McKelvey (Centre on knowledge-intensive innovation ecosystems) chaired the following session and explains this workshop. - I ’ve organized the workshop in this way to tap into what is happening right now and provide the opportunity for reflections and learning. What is changing now is related to some broader debates in society about the relationships between the knowledge economy, innovation, and challenge to the universities. One view can be summarized more as “leave science alone and enable autonomy” while another view is “make universities and science directly responsible to society”. https://lnkd.in/dJvQZiYv

👏 Three TUM proposals are in line for funding as new Clusters of Excellence. 👏 We are proud to confirm that an affiliation exists between the excellence cluster #TransforM and the TUM School of Management, represented by Prof. Sebastian Pfotenhauer, Prof. Hanna Hottenrott, and Prof. Holger Patzelt. Our affiliate member Prof. Sebastian Pfotenhauer is a Professor of #Innovation Research and head of the Innovation, Society, and Public Policy Research Group at the TUM School of Management, he is STS Department Head of the Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS) and spokesperson for the TransfroM cluster. ℹ About TransforM: Munich Center for Transformative Technologies and Social Change On the one hand, transformative technologies are seen as the key to solving major challenges such as climate change, energy, mobility, and health care; on the other hand, they lead to increasing skepticism towards innovation and public controversies. As an #interdisciplinary social science cluster, TransforM aims to rethink theories, methods, and practices of participation, legitimacy, responsibility, security, and resilience regarding transformative technologies for dynamically changing societies. At the same time, the cluster wants to explore how these social concerns can be better anchored in innovation processes to reconcile technological progress and economic opportunities with social, ecological, and political interests in the future. The approval of the respective Clusters of Excellence will be announced on May 22, 2025. Fingers crossed for the final round! 🤞 ➡ For more information: https://lnkd.in/ewT7NbTH Technical University of Munich

Outstanding success in the #Excellence Strategy: #TUDresden enters the next round with three new Clusters of Excellence initiatives 🎉 TUD Dresden University of Technology can celebrate a remarkable success as part of the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State governments: In Germany's most important competition for funding for cutting-edge research, three new Cluster of Excellence Initiatives were invited to submit a full application. As a result, TUD ranks second overall in the number of calls for proposals in the current competition nationwide. This is according to today’s joint announcement (February 2, 2024) by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation and the German Science and Humanities Council (WR). An international panel of experts appointed by the DFG and the WR through the Joint Science Conference (GWK) has assessed a total of 143 draft proposals over the last few days and selected 41 as valuable funding opportunities. By August 22, 2024, TU Dresden will submit a full proposal for the following Cluster of Excellence initiatives for the 2026 to 2032 funding phase: 🔹 BiC Behavior in Context: Brain and Machine Computations of Behavior in Complex and Uncertain Environments. 🔹 CARE Climate-Neutral and Resource-Efficient Construction (with RWTH Aachen University) 🔹 REC2: Responsible Electronics in the Climate Change Era In addition, TUD's three existing Clusters of Excellence have expressed their intent to the DFG that they wish to continue their outstanding research work. TUD, therefore, enters the next round of Cluster of Excellence evaluations with three already existing and three new Clusters of Excellence. Further info ➡ https://lnkd.in/emCCug3H

The National Science Board--the governing body that sets the policies of the National Science Foundation--has recently become one of my favorite advisory boards to monitor in the #sciencepolicy realm. Their discussions and subcommittee reports are data-driven and forward-thinking, which is crucial as science grows increasingly complex. I look forward to seeing what the NSB will accomplish under the leadership of Drs. Gil and McCrary! https://lnkd.in/eb-pcVde
