When I talk to people who are charting a career path, I sometimes get the question, “Why would I want to work for a subcontractor?” What they might not see is that the opportunities here can be so much greater — and advancement can come quickly. You won’t have to be on a two-year “development” track before you can get out in the field. And even if you aren’t lacing up boots and getting in the mud, there’s still an opportunity to influence, shape, and impact a project. In a growing organization like ours, opportunities present themselves organically to keep pace with that growth — allowing more room for people to stretch and take on new roles. We also work on the same big projects as large organizations. We can point to hotels, airports, and skyscrapers and say, “Hey, I helped build that!” We get to be part of something you can see. And the enjoyment and pride that comes with that far outweighs what you might experience somewhere else. When it comes to Baker, subcontractor doesn’t mean “less than.” It’s so much more.

In the words of the great Eric Thomas: Thank God It's Monday! This is going to be a great week working on the 2025 Lion Targets this week but I got something really on my mind right now. One of the things that has made me really happy is all the targeted relationships formed since I purged all those people that were not bringing any value. It allowed me room to use my Phase 1 Lion Pride review to make sure that my social media and relationships built would bring value, build partnership based on delivering results, and create meaningful connection, community, & support that will last the test of time. So today I am going to start delivering on something I told Piera Hosinski I would do today as a person that wants to be in the AEC field. My goal is to start highlighting 1 time a week people that I have built relationships to leverage my network to make a big spot light on them to help them find a home in our field. Piera is in the middle of a pivot wanting to work for a general contractor after years in the IT field seeing how volatile that market is. She has been so determined to do this that she is taking smaller roles in the Detroit area learning all the ropes and building relationships at the same time. Her goal is working for a general contractor in either an assistant PM or superintendent in the area. But what makes her very unique is that she is highly open to a traveling APM/Super role working for a GC or big trades contractor. I can't express how rare this is given that an average person would not be able to make a role work with a family or other things. So today I am highlighting and making sure the AEC community is fully aware of my Pride Mate Piera so we can help with leads and opportunities to be in the field. In a world where many people are running from the field, this amazing person is running towards it instead. And extra bonus being able to get another Woman to be in Construction as well which is a very big deal to me. So if our field really needs people as badly as we keep saying, then it's time to deliver with action and results to give this person a shot so she can make a difference for the AEC community. And I will be doing this 1 time a week spotlighting either people looking to break into AEC fields or stay within the field already. Many people gave back to me while I was in a 3.5 month job search and I am here to do what others did for me. Our onsite team? They’re absolute legends. They don’t just meet every new resident in their territories—they own that moment. During a project discussion today, someone called it a "Mount Rushmore Moment". But for the lions share of public sector employees and myself, it didn't really ring true. Consider that most public sector employees are motivated by; A desire to make a positive impact on their communities and contribute to the greater good, the satisfaction of directly helping people and making their lives better, and the feeling that their work contributes to something important beyond just a paycheck. Consider asking a co-worker about their motivation - The specific challenges you're tackling that make a difference in people's lives, the sense of accomplishment you get from overcoming those challenges, and the collaborative nature of public service work.

Had an amazing couple of days spent with many colleagues, from all areas of Crawford & Company at the Birmingham offices. It is always said that: Every day is a School Day and these last couple of days have been just that. So many topics were discussed and trust me, so many words written (my poor hand! 😂), but the end result is New Knowledge. It is not only great for yourself when attending technical days, welcome days and such like but a great opportunity for the business as a whole also. There are many fresh ideas that would otherwise stay unspoken, different ways to approach and achieve and just a general reminder that there’s great knowledge, expertise, experience and help, right at your fingertips, should you need it (let’s be honest, we all need it). Employee Highlight: Steve S. Meet Steve S., our resident expert and multi-talented team member at Element Tempe. Steve wears many hats, serving as our Quality Manager, Safety Officer, Deputy Export Compliance Officer, and the go-to backup guy for just about everything. With 22.5 years at Element, Steve literally knows everything there is to know about this facility. One of Steve's proudest achievements is the in-house development of our solar chambers. “They were built from scratch to meet the specific requirements of MIL-STD-810G and have been noted by several clients as having the best spectrum match they had ever seen,” he says. This project showcases Steve's dedication to quality and innovation. Steve enjoys the variety of activities his job offers and values the people he works with. “The teamwork here is exceptional—everyone contributes to getting the job done safely and correctly,” he shares. The varied backgrounds of the staff allow them to tackle challenges from multiple angles to find effective solutions. What motivates Steve? The opportunity to learn something new and the chance to share his knowledge. Born in California and raised in Colorado, Steve has called Phoenix home for many years. Married for almost 50 years (wow!!), he has two adult children with advanced degrees and has had many dogs and cats over the years. Outside of work, Steve is a ferroeqinologist (can anyone guess what that means??), enjoys taking pictures (though he humbly admits he’s not really a photographer), and prefers spending time around green trees and running water. Looking ahead, Steve sees Element growing in both capacity and capability, embracing inevitable change and continuing to thrive. Uisce Éireann Irish Water is a brillant place to learn huge array of things about water and wastewater and how we bring clean safe drinking water to 1.7 million homes and 178,000 businesses. We’re a regulated business with significant commitments to deliver a resilient water services. We’ve Customer teams, a huge Operations Team who have real challenges every day to keep the water flowing. We also deliver huge strategic programmes with over 8,000 different assets from reservoirs, to pumping station, water and wastewater treatment plants and a whopping 63,000 kilometres of water pipes, much of it old and in need of upgrade. Our graduates will be exposed to the science bit, hydreology, laboratory testing of water, how we build and manage vast amount of infrastructure, to energy and to the future using renewable energy sources. We are thrilled to announce the promotion of Prenolan Thaver to Regional Manager for the Coastal Region and look forward to the impact he will have in his new role. We also had the chance to ask him some questions about his career insights and new role! ✨ Q1: What inspired you to pursue a career in civil engineering? My longstanding interest in solving complex problems naturally led me to civil engineering. This field focuses on designing and implementing infrastructure that addresses real-world challenges. The opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society and enhance quality of life was a primary motivator for me. Q2: What are you most excited about in your new role as regional manager? What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to lead and inspire a team, fostering their growth and development while building a strong, cohesive unit. Additionally, I am eager to shape and execute strategies that drive success and to implement new initiatives and processes that enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and overall team performance.
