Many practitioners characterise themselves as coaches and what they do as coaching. A number have the title ‘Safety Coach’. Few have any training or qualification … which is possibly one reason why the term ‘coaching’ is so often misunderstood and misused. ‘Real’ coaching is not new, but the way it is used in organisations is evolving. Increasingly, organisations aspire to have a culture in which colleagues are able to have live, in the moment, collaborative conversations with a view to solving problems and improving performance. Increasingly, the ability to coach is being seen as an essential skill. So, if you’re looking to hone your coaching skills and distinguish yourself from many others, if you’re looking to: - - tap into what your colleagues (or clients) know and understand about what’s going on and what’s possible; and - collaborate with colleagues (or clients) to find the best solution to a problem, even when you have no technical knowledge to contribute yourself, IOSH Approved Coaching for safety really was designed for you. Have a great week! #Coachingforsafety #Coachingculture #Culturebuilding

Compassionate Leader, Mentor and Coach | As a transformation consultant, I support organizations, teams and leaders in their transition, creating their vision, fulfilling their mission for their impact in the world.
Rediscovering Coaching: Key Insights from IECL Level One in Shanghai Building on the rich backdrop of my move to China discussed in the last post, today I delve into the transformative experience of the IECL Executive Coaching Level One course I attended in Shanghai. This course not only filled the gaps I felt in my previous coaching training but also redefined my understanding of what effective coaching entails. The IECL Level One course was a pivotal moment in my coaching career. It offered a fresh perspective on the fundamental aspects of coaching, emphasizing the crucial role of metaskills such as mindfulness, compassion, and curiosity—elements that are essential yet often overlooked. 1. Establishing Trust and Rapport: From the outset, the course underscored the importance of building trust and rapport. I learned that the foundation of any successful coaching relationship is the genuine connection established from the first interaction. This involves being fully present and authentically engaged with the client, setting the stage for a transformative journey. 2. The Crucible for Change: A significant takeaway was understanding the coaching relationship as a 'crucible for change.' This concept transformed how I approached coaching sessions, focusing not just on the goals but on creating a safe and dynamic space where real change could occur. The relationship itself became a powerful vessel for insight and transformation. 3. The GROW Model: The introduction of the GROW model (Goal, Reality, Options, Will/Wrap-up/Way forward) provided a structured yet flexible framework for navigating coaching conversations. This model helped me guide clients more effectively by clearly defining goals, exploring realities, generating options, and committing to action steps. It was a game-changer in making coaching sessions more impactful and directed. The IECL Level One course was more than just a training program; it was a journey of rediscovery that challenged and expanded my coaching philosophy. It equipped me with tools and frameworks that I continue to use and adapt in my practice today. Reflect on a learning experience that significantly impacted your professional practice. How did it change your approach or philosophy? Share your reflections below, and let’s discuss how continuous learning shapes our careers. #ExecutiveCoaching #IECL #CoachingTools #ProfessionalGrowth #GROWModel
