On June 26th, International Women in Engineering Day, we want to celebrate all the women who are working in this field or pursuing a career in engineering. Although women have been underrepresented in the technical industry in the past and unfortunately still today, there are more and more women who are choosing to start a career in this field, paving the way for future generations. Petra Beckmann, training supervisor at Flender, shares this opinion: “I think it's important that women also go into the "more typically male professions", as this means there is much more diversity in the company. Women also often have a different perspective on things and therefore approach tasks differently.” Women are just as capable as men in solving complex technical problems and developing innovative solutions. It is important that we, as a society, recognize and support the talents and abilities of women in engineering. Therefore, we encourage all women to get involved in this field and pursue their dreams. Whether you are interested in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or another technical discipline, your skills and enthusiasm are invaluable. “The image of the engineering profession in people's minds needs to be changed. We work in interdisciplinary, intercultural teams, you get to work with lots of people and develop new things together. It's very exciting and enriching and there are so many different tasks, there's something for everyone.” says Petra Wiersch, engineer in the sector of bearings at Flender. She also says that when she decided on a career in engineering, she was sure that she could do it and took the liberty of just trying it out. It was a good decision, which makes her happy. Workforce issues are a hot topic in most industries these days and engineering is no different. I am looking forward to the conversation at this virtual summit and hope to see you all there!

I am excited to be attending Engineers Canada's 30 by 30 summit in Winnipeg next week: Turning Knowledge into Action for Gender Equity in Engineering. 'The 30 by 30 initiative was adopted by Engineers Canada in 2014, with the goal of increasing the proportion of newly licensed female-identifying engineers to 30 per cent by the year 2030. A great deal of collective effort is needed across the engineering profession to reach the 30 by 30 goal. Regulators, employers, post-secondary institutions, and engineering leaders need to acknowledge the issue and work together to address the culture of exclusion and improve the recruitment and retention of women in engineering'.

REVISED I’ve been under weather : Although I agree in essence with MIT President Kormbluth's decision, in that DEI initiatives end up hurting minorities more than they help because they’re not rooted in meritocracy but in the perception of political ideas, I find her approach disingenuous. Her argument tends to be used to keep minorities shuffling with their acquiescent feet and empty heads down. After all, she’s one of the elites. As a conservative free marketeer, I believe that the free market should determine hiring decisions rather than political ideologies. However, it's easy for her to essentially present an argument that continues to justify the hiring of elites because they’re perceived to be more qualified. From my perspective, individuals from underrepresented groups are damned if they do and damned if they don’t, doomed and damned to never get hired due to the hiring gap, which is exacerbated by the existing condescension in woke culture and the transparent exclusion present in conservative elite circles.

The State of Construction Apprenticeship Report 2024 spotlights a glaring concern: a 5% drop in new construction apprenticeships. With only 24,530 newcomers in 2022-23, reaching our communal goal to close the skills gap seems a formidable challenge! Why the decline? A mix of high entry standards and enticing alternative career paths play their part. This is about more than numbers - it's the future of UK infrastructure at risk. Yet, there's a silver lining. Women and minorities are joining the ranks like never before, hinting at a shift in demographics. As a staunch supporter of women in construction, I see this as a momentous opportunity. It's time to reshape our strategy, from the classroom to the construction site. Apprenticeships are a beacon for diversity and innovation. So, let's discuss: How can we make engineering apprenticeships more appealing to the next generation? Could lowering entry barriers be the key to unlocking potential? Your thoughts are invaluable. 🎓 I'm excited to share that I've completed my master's thesis with a grade of 8!   Titled "Critical Analysis of PVV's Discursive Impact on Diversity and Inclusion in the Netherlands," my thesis explores how right-wing populist discourse can shape employee attitudes and perceptions regarding to Diversity and Inclusion. This has been a challenging, at times frightening, but incredibly enriching journey, and I am excited to share my key findings.   Using Teun van Dijk's socio-cognitive approach to Critical Discourse Analysis, I analyzed the PVV's 2023 election program. My study revealed how the PVV simplifies complex political messages into easily digestible themes, using rhetorical techniques like fear-mongering and repetition to shape public perception. The discourse creates a dichotomy between "us" (native Dutch) and "them" (immigrants), perpetuating stereotypes and reinforcing power dynamics. Terms like "gender insanity" and "diversity nonsense" delegitimize serious discussions on D&I, framing them as irrational and extreme. What sets my research apart is its systematic unpacking of the PVV's "common sense" rhetoric, highlighting exactly how these messages are constructed to influence public opinion.   Additionally, I conducted 14 semi-structured interviews with professionals across various organizations. Employee perceptions varied, with many expressing concerns over its divisive impact on workplace inclusivity. Many interviewees questioned the PVV's narrow definition of "Netherlander," potentially fostering division and overlooking the multifaceted identity of modern Dutch society. This rhetoric may challenge organizations to integrate D&I comprehensively, allowing exclusionary narratives to take root. Although I initially hesitated about the subject of my thesis due to venturing into the unfamiliar domain of politics and the need to acquire new methodological skills, such as familiarizing myself with CDA, I feel proud that I went for it.
