One of my favorite things to do during summer vacation is to gain knowledge.

Finally, it’s that time of year we all look forward to - summer vacation. I'm unplugging - more literally than usual. I'm generally not dependent on my phone, but I also feel it increasingly demands more daily attention. That's why I will put it away this summer to create better space for other, more important things. Summer and vacation have a sense of freedom, but this summer seems different. How did we end up with the largest continuous war on our continent since World War II? With a violent conflict in the Middle East? With a significant rightward shift in several large countries in Europe? With a worrying and fateful American election, an increasing buildup of structural competition, and a budding trade war with China? A summer where we inevitably will be confronted with continuous climate change. It's a stark contrast to the joy of our summer vacation, and it's a reminder of the global challenges we face. As Europeans, we must remember to appreciate the overall conditions in which we can live our lives compared with the rest of the world – a summer in freedom. Let's promise to pause and remind each other of this: The greatest threat to freedom is that we take it for granted.

My favorite job so far…Mom. So very proud of this Global Graduate! Sending her off to University of St Andrews for 4 years was gut wrenching but we cherished every moment shared on her incredible journey. Here are some reflections on why you too may want to consider looking outside of the USA during your children’s college search: *Personal Growth: Witness your child develop independence, adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a global perspective. (Hello obtaining a Visa, flight issues and language barriers.) *Strengthen Family Bonds: Create lasting memories and deepen your family relationship through shared experiences as you tend to visit for longer and plug in some additional travel. *Cultural Enrichment: Gain a deeper appreciation for different cultures and perspectives through friendships made and new family friends . Her gang traveled the world seamlessly and cheaply (thank you Ryan Air!) *Future-Proofing: Equip your child with the skills and mindset needed to thrive past their college years. *Financial Considerations: Explore potential cost savings from lower tuition costs abroad.
