I am thrilled to read the latest report “Taking Action on Operational Efficiency” from the Global Maritime Forum showcases the current state of operational efficiency in the shipping sector 🛳 . Summarising:  Action is taken across the industry, with a focus on collaboration 🤝 materialising in the area of data and transparency. Ports, terminals and value chains are lagging behind. More pilots are needed, the quest for industry remains on implementation of measures. We applaud the industry leaders like Cargill, Euronav, Port of Rotterdam, Viterra, Bunge for sharing their actions and commitment. It is an essential step in the collaboration to drive efficiency in the maritime supply chain. "Exposing and eliminating waste and risk in cargo movement", is the Teqplay mission. By exposing the waste we know we can provide you with the the data required to build a sound business case. Operational efficiency received a lot of attention across our community.   Improving the operational efficiency reduces fuel use and operating expenditures, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions today and paves the way for the uptake of more expensive zero-emission fuels in the long run.   Operational efficiency is key to reducing emissions now and paving the way for the uptake of zero-emission fuels in the future. Thirty-three companies, organisations, and industry associations underlined the need for the accelerated uptake of operational efficiency measures by signing the Global Maritime Forum’s Operational Efficiency Ambition Statement in autumn 2023. 

On of the most important things we do is look at what is already happening in the maritime industry, under the light of what's possible, and what's needed. This report does a really systematic job at documenting what industry is doing on operational efficiency across five crucial action areas: data collection and transparency; contractual changes; pilot projects; ports, terminals, and value chains; and culture and leadership. A lot is happening: but the opportunity is even bigger. Time to get moving!

While some pilot projects are in motion, the report highlights a need for more initiatives among charterers, ship owners, and ports and terminals. The report emphasizes the need for deeper engagement and collaboration across the entire value chain to overcome hurdles and get a handle on the untapped potential. It's not just about addressing gaps; it's an opportunity to forge partnerships that drive meaningful change.
