There once was a long-running game, To decide on a small country's name, Macedonia, step forth, Not the south, but the north, Yes, it's all been a terrible shame. But now we all know what to do, Add the "North" to the name, that's the clue, Now that Greece can agree, Let's all live fair and free, Macedonia, cheers, here's to you! I've just enjoyed a fascinating two weeks in the small Balkan nation of North Macedonia, which might be best known for its long-running dispute with Greece over the name of the country. Although present-day North Macedonia does lie entirely within the boundaries of ancient Macedonia, the ancient kingdom also included parts of Bulgaria and Greece, and the latter has its own region called Macedonia so objected to the new nation using the name for itself. After being known internationally for some time as "FYROM" (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), this little country eventually signed the Prespa Agreement with Greece in 2018, establishing the official name of the country as the Republic of North Macedonia. Here's a picture of the statue of Alexander the Great – sorry, "Warrior on a Horse", as they are obliged to call it – in the centre of Skopje. Yesterday was May 6th, and Orthodox Christians following the old (Julian) calendar celebrated St George. If your #Serbian carrier/driver was a little unresponsive yesterday and today, give them a break. Every Serbian family has a family saint, celebrated for centuries back, and we can also trace our roots depending on which saint we celebrate. We call it slava (St George is one of the most common), and it is the most important cultural/social event for us. My family is far from traditional, but we make sure our Chicago-born boys experience it with close friends. If you are ever invited to #slava, you will have an amazing time as long as you are not vegetarian, keep your rakija intake in check and you are not working for one of the notorious #freight brokers we shouldn't mention... P.S. We need to listen to each other, in order to do so we need free press, free speech and free social media. Humanity needs fresh ideas and a new type of politics, representing mankind as a whole instead of fragmented political interests! We have to grow together in order to urgently address the issues that impact all of us like conflict, climate change, inequality and forced migration together. In 1519, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés led 600 men to the coast of Mexico to conquer the Aztec Empire.   Upon arriving, Cortés realized his forces were vastly outnumbered by the Aztecs.   Fully committed to the mission and to eliminate any thoughts of retreat, Cortés ordered his ships to be burned.   Cortés removed the option of retreat and forced his men to fully commit to the mission ahead. The only way for his men to survive and return home was to win.   Where in your work or life are you feeling you may be at the point of no return?   Do you need to “burn the ships?”   What course of action do you need to take that will eliminate any possibility of retreat?

Sparta was one of the most important spots in not only Greece, but the entire Europe as well. During such period, the territory of Sparta would comprise the regions nowadays known as Messenia and Laconia. Only a small portion of that ancient territory continues being called Sparta, an area located towards the northern side of Laconia.
