Completion of Key Quays at Al Faw Grand Port Marks Major Milestone
Shipping Arabia, May 8, 2024 — Dr. Farhan Al-Fartousi, General Manager of the Iraqi Ports Company, announced the successful completion of quays number (3) and (4) at Al Faw Grand Port. This accomplishment is a significant stride in the comprehensive development project aimed at enhancing Iraq’s maritime infrastructure.
Dr. Al-Fartousi expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress, stating, "The project map at Al Faw Grand Port is progressing at a high and accelerating pace, achieving advanced completion rates with no delays." The announcement follows the earlier completion of quay number (2) and sets the stage for the finalization of quay number (5) expected in June, with the grand opening of the quays scheduled for October.
Al Faw Grand Port's container terminal project, a critical component of this expansion, includes the construction of five large quays extending over 1750 meters and a vast container yard measuring 2000 meters. These developments are poised to substantially increase the port's operational capacity upon their inauguration.
The recent completions underscore Iraq's commitment to bolstering its position as a formidable player in international maritime logistics, with Al Faw Grand Port set to play a pivotal role in the region’s shipping and trade activities once fully operational.

Do you need support with complex industrial supply chain challenges? Check out this recent example of AIT’s exceptional logistics performance.
When an energy company needed to move more than 16,000 pounds of high-value equipment from the Netherlands to an oil refinery in Qatar, our teams in Europe and the Middle East collaborated to successfully orchestrate an on-time and on-budget air shipment.
Our air export and pricing teams worked closely with the client, consulting to compare air charter versus airlift options for the most cost-effective solution. AIT also provided essential guidance on packaging requirements for the equipment (which is used to clean and analyze oil pipelines) as well as documentation support to ensure a seamless process.
And, with a commitment to excellence, AIT experts personally visited the client's site to ensure the equipment was adequately prepared for in-gauge commercial air transport on a Boeing 777 widebody freighter, carefully inspecting crate sizing to guarantee lower deck compatibility.
The freight was swiftly packed and prepared for flight within a tight timeline – less than 30 minutes from the client’s first phone call to take off! – ensuring the cargo arrived in time to meet up with a flatbed trailer in Qatar for ground transport to the refinery by the scheduled date.

Did you know that SOLAS vessels encapsulate passenger-carrying vessels on international voyages, and cargo vessels (including oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas carriers, bulk carriers, container ships, and mobile offshore drilling units) of 500 gross tonnage and above?
The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) was a treaty signed to make merchant ships safer.
"All countries that are signatories to SOLAS have implemented the ISM Code for SOLAS vessels operating under their flag. In addition, many countries (e.g. the United Kingdom, Norway, and Australia) have extended safety management requirements to a greater portion of their non-SOLAS fleet."
In Canada, however, an upcoming mandate will soon be applied to include all the other classes to have a documented marine safety management system in place.
