🌍 New Approach for Supporting GBI Developments in Hungary 🌿 In the framework of the NbS4Local - Interreg Europe project BURST has provided advisory support to the Managing Authority of Hungary's Environmental and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme Plus (#KEHOP Plus) for the upcoming KEHOP-Plus-2.2.1 call aimed at developing green-blue infrastructure in municipalities. This initiative is designed to prevent urban damage caused by uneven rainfall distribution by planning and implementing green-blue infrastructure (#GBI) interventions. The call will focus on nature-based solutions that harness the natural services of ecosystems, ensuring the conservation, collection, and use of water in urban catchment areas. These interventions provide environmental, social, and economic benefits while enhancing resilience to climate change. The proposal emphasizes a novel approach in the realm of nationally managed EU funding schemes (also drawing on experience from the #NBS4Local project, e.g. the Flemish Blue Deal policy): 🤸♂️ Flexibility: It avoids over-regulation, giving project managers more freedom to address local, specific challenges. The technical and professional requirements do not set specific technical parameters or specifications but instead provide reference points, outlining expectations in terms of perspective and approach. 🎯 Integrated Approach: It goes beyond the traditional investment-focused mindset. We suggest that projects ensure long-term local organizational, regulatory, operational, and monitoring frameworks for the planned developments (including comprehensive local strategic and regulatory frameworks for GBI networks, qualified human resources and conscious monitoring efforts). 👥 Community engagement: It emphasizes local partnerships, making educational and volunteer programs essential. Awareness raising activities can include actions and program elements promoted among private actors on private properties (such as greening private properties, promoting rainwater collection, and creating #community gardens). The call aims to encourage projects that align with European values and the spirit of the New European Bauhaus (#NEB) initiative. Funded projects should adhere to NEB's core values: sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics, as well as its working principles: participatory process, transdisciplinary approach and multi-level engagement. We hope that the essence of our proposal will be considered and integrated into the upcoming call. Stay tuned for more updates as the call is expected to be announced this fall! 🌱 #Sustainability #GreenBlueInfrastructure #ClimateResilience #KEHOP #CommunityEngagement #Innovation #GBI #BURST #BURSTgroup #interreg

As Aotearoa navigates the critical transition towards a sustainable, low carbon economy, the role of local line companies becomes increasingly significant. These companies are pivotal in ensuring our energy infrastructure can meet rising demand while facilitating the sustainable transition. To achieve these goals in a cost-effective manner, adopting innovative technologies and making better use of existing infrastructure is essential. Not only will this enhance the efficiency of our local line companies, but it will serve to mitigate potential increases in consumer prices. Ensuring consumers and other stakeholders understand how well these companies are performing is another important step in ensuring industry-wide improvements. To help enable this, we have commissioned Cambridge Economic Policy Associates (CEPA) to analyse the productivity of New Zealand's local lines companies over the 2008-2023 period. We invite feedback on CEPA's draft report. This input will be invaluable in guiding our approach to measuring productivity in the future - please share your perspectives by Wednesday, 24 April here: infrastructure.regulation@comcom.govt.nz Read the report here 👉 https://rb.gy/jdyjde

We have just published a draft assessment of the long term productivity performance of electricity distribution businesses (EDBs) in Aotearoa NZ. It shows a sustained decline in the productivity indices. It is sometimes said that "productivity isn't everything, but in the long run, it is almost everything." We all may have different views on this; here's mine: accurately measuring productivity performance is important, especially at times of rising costs and consumer prices. Lower productivity, when accurately measured, means we are paying more for the same. Technological change offers unprecedented opportunities for EDBs to improve productivity. We are keen to hear your views on how to improve the measurement of productivity. You can access the analysis here: https://rb.gy/jdyjde. Please send us your feedback to infrastructure.regulation@comcom.govt.nz by Wednesday 24 April.

🌍 Representing the eFuel Alliance at the ALDE Party Congress! 🇪🇺 Today, I had the privilege of representing the eFuel Alliance at a critical roundtable on Sustainability and Strengthening Europe’s Competitiveness during the ALDE Party Congress in beautiful Lisbon, Portugal. The session was chaired by MEP Billy Kelleher MEP with key contributions from MEP Sigrid Friis and MEP Jeannette Baljeu 🙌 💡 Key Takeaways from My Message: 1️⃣ Technology-Neutral Approach 🔧 To foster innovation and true competition, it’s crucial that Europe adopts a technology-neutral approach when it comes to sustainable solutions. Focusing on one favored technology could hold us back from discovering better, more efficient alternatives! 🚀 2️⃣ Enabling Competition = Enabling Competitiveness 🏁 True competitiveness in Europe can only happen if we allow fair competition in the market. Right now, we need to tackle regulatory barriers that prevent the import and use of sustainable fuels. Opening up the market means encouraging innovation and efficiency on a global scale. 🌍 3️⃣ A Complicated Regulatory Framework ⚖️ The current regulatory system is overly complex and built on a rigid dogma of presumed superiority of European definitions of sustainability. 🌐 We need to rethink this approach and make regulations simpler, fairer, and more adaptable, creating a framework that encourages sustainability while still enhancing Europe’s competitiveness. Finding the right balance between these two priorities is key to our success. ⚖️💼 🗣️ Together, we can make real progress towards a greener and more competitive Europe!
