Yogyakarta, known as the city of students, is one of the most popular cities in Indonesia for studying. Yvonne Klerks, the Education and Science Attaché, and her team recently visited Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), one of Indonesia’s top universities, for a courtesy meeting with the Office of International Affairs. It was also a wonderful pleasure to meet Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC., Ph.D, the former Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology. The meeting was about the current partnerships between Dutch universities and UGM, as well as current policies on higher education, research, and science in Indonesia. On this occasion, the Education and Science Attaché participated in the Summer Course on Hydrogen’s Role in Energy Transition, which is a collaboration between Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (University of Groningen) in the Netherlands, and the Energy Academy Indonesia | ECADIN. It is critical that the Netherlands work internationally to find solutions to global challenges like climate change. There are a considerable number of valuable projects between Indonesian and Dutch universities related to global challenges, and this initiative in Indonesia on renewable energy is a wonderful example. Thank you, Groningen University and UGM, for the insightful visit, and we wish you success in continuing this excellent collaboration!

𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗕𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗦 Submission Deadline: March 7, 2024 (ET) The American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS), in collaboration with Michigan State University (MSU) Asian Studies Center, will hold 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗦-𝗠𝗦𝗨 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟴 - 𝟮𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. The conference continues to highlight and celebrate the growing and evolving academic study of Indonesia. The conference aims to expand research dissemination and collaboration by connecting Indonesian scholars with international colleagues in a bilingual and virtual format. The program committee invites abstract submissions from scholars across broad disciplinary perspectives in the study of Indonesia. While abstracts on any topic focusing on Indonesia are welcome, the committee is especially interested in research that engages discourses on the trajectory of Indonesia, past and present, and broadly defined. 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙖 𝘼𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙩? Indonesia is experiencing a kind of ascendance on the global stage that is drawing a lot of attention and interest. Notably, Indonesia’s success stands out compared to other contexts as the nation continues to be a global exemplar of religious pluralism and democracy. And yet there is a sense of the Indonesian project being somehow “unfinished,” stuck, or backsliding in some ways. What progress (kemajuan) has been made and how do we know? In environmental management, Indonesia is either on the cusp of fulfilling great opportunity as a leader in global climate change or of resource degradation and collapse. Inspired images of the plan to construct a national eco-capital city, Nusantara, symbolizes Indonesia’s sustainable future but contrasts with continued dependence of resource extraction evident from the many coal barges pummeling past the banks of the Mahakam river. I'm thrilled to announce that I will defend my PhD dissertation "Contestation, Conflict, and Crisis in Transition: The Embedding of Ridesharing in Indonesia" on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, from 12:15 to 13:15 CET. 😍 🙀 In my research, I explore the transformative impact of ridesharing on urban mobility transitions in Indonesia, a context distinctly different from Western experiences. My study highlights how contestations, conflicts, and crises shape the Global South's policy responses and future trajectories. Key findings include: 🚗 The role of commercial drivers in Indonesia's ridesharing landscape. 🗝️ The importance of conflict in self-organization and transition processes. ⏳ Diverse perceptions of time horizons and non-technological aspects in envisioning the future. 🌍 The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on informal institutions and transition governance. My research underscores the need for context-specific governance strategies and inclusive stakeholder engagement to navigate transitions effectively. I'd be honoured if you could join me at the Academiegebouw, Domplein 29, or online via the livestream. Your support means the world to me! PhD Supervisors: Rob Raven, Maarten A. Hajer, Wouter Boon Co-Supervisor: Frans Sengers 📅 Date: June 26, 2024 🕛 Time: 12:15 - 13:15 📍 Location: Academiegebouw, Domplein 29 & online (livestream link) https://lnkd.in/giEx7_dh #PhDDefense #Ridesharing #UrbanMobility #Indonesia #GlobalSouth #Research #Academia #TransitionGovernance #InclusiveStakeholderEngagement
