Downright concerning. To reduce the risk of wildfire, maintain a clean and well-maintained property, install smoke alarms, develop a fire escape plan, use fire-resistant materials, practice fire safety, and stay informed about local fire conditions.

Not good. And more heat coming... As I sit here listening to sirens drive by, I find myself thinking - how many of these acres are going to burn at high severity? How many will need to be reforested? How much seed will we need to do that? Do we have enough? But more then anything - I think about the people aspect of this - how these fires not only impact life and property, but infrastructure and public safety as a whole. Be safe out there - and much gratutude to our firefighters. Reforestation is only one part of the over arching goal, to build RESILIENT FORESTS. Heading out for training on cutting fire lines on the fringes of Camp Pendleton with California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)! Dozers are a critical tool in the forest firefighting arsenal. Not only do they help crews access fires, but they can help contain them by cutting fire lines like this one. Fires need fuel—which usually comes from decaying trees, brush, or grass. By using dozers to remove the fuel strategically, CALFIRE crews can stop fires from spreading. Every year, before fire season, all dozer crews train in real-world scenarios before they’re quite literally in the line of fire. #betterdirtworld

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) firefighters completed 30 acres of prescribed fire today. This is part of our C-234 (Intermediate Firing Methods) class that teaches the students how to use common firing devices and techniques used in back firing operations and prescribed burns. This is required for new company officers and firefighters in specialty positions. We also used the ALERTCalifornia cameras in the area to monitor real time conditions. As seen in the timelapse video below we get to see what the smoke column looked like. Smoke conditions can be a good indicator of fire behavior and can give insight into fire potential before the initial units arrive on scene. "As of July 30, 2024, wildfires have scorched a staggering 751,327 acres across our state. This year's wildfire activity is 2,816% higher than last year, 29 times the amount of acreage burned. The numbers are a stark reminder: 95% of wildfires are caused by humans. Stay vigilant—follow fire safety guidelines, maintain defensible space, and report suspicious activities. A rapid fire that erupted in Bidwell Park, about 85 miles north of Sacramento, California, on Wednesday has already spread over 45,000 acres, forcing residents to be evacuated. The fire is only 3% contained, according to the latest update from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). California has had 2 winters of plentiful rain & snow that has encouraged vast amounts of vegetation to spring up, leaving plenty of fuel around to ignite during the driest time of the year. Dead, dried-out grasses & small shrubs are often the kindling needed to start large blazes. But according to CAL FIRE, the cause of the Park Fire is still under investigation. According to AirNow.gov across NORAM, the worst air quality right now is in central, western Saskatchewan where conditions are hazardous. Now heading back to California the state has been gripped by drought since the early 2000s & has been devastated by wildfires in recent years. And they've caused hundreds of deaths, destroyed thousands of homes & created economic losses. Also this has caused many utilities to cut electricity to residents when fire risks arise.
