🚀🔗 When experts in technology transfer, founders, and investors get together to discuss how to facilitate successful technology transfer from academic research institutions to startups! 💡   Partners from technology transfer offices of Universität Heidelberg (#hei_INNOVATION, ScienceValue Heidelberg GmbH), DKFZ Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum and EMBL Enterprise Management Technology Transfer GmbH (#EMBLEM) as well as experienced founders, investors and ecosystem representatives (BioRN Life Science Cluster Rhine-Neckar and Heidelberg Startup Partners e.V.) met in Heidelberg to enter into a lively discussion on the challenges startups face when trying to secure access to Intellectual property owned by their research institution.    Here's a quick rundown of some key takeaways:   Agile Implementation: Speed is essential for success of startups. Thus, academic research institutions need to commit to an “enabling” culture by implementing standardized and digitalized administrative processes to enhance technology transfer efficiency. Showcasing Role Models: Embracing the lessons gained from both successes and failures there is a need to spotlight inspiring role models and amplify their visibility for aspiring entrepreneurs. Transparency and communication: Startups and technology transfer offices often describe contract negotiations with each other as a non-transparent process. Despite Europe's leadership in research, many groundbreaking technologies don't reach the market. DT Launch Pad, led by Delft University of Technology, has a goal to change that. This project supports the European Deep Tech community with comprehensive services, talent development, international knowledge exchange, and fostering start-ups. Currently, in Work Package 2, we're mapping research and assets to understand the needs of Deep Tech in Europe. With a strong industrial base, it offers an ideal environment for aspiring entrepreneurs, with top academic institutions, incubators and accelerators, all contributing to the creation of a vibrant startup hub. Fondazione E. Amaldi has expanded its presence in the Turin area with a dedicated office, with the aim of fostering the development of novel ideas and systemic projects on a national scale. Open Science and Biotech Startups Andy Tay's post in Nature, "The open-science movement for sharing laboratory materials gains momentum" made me think about how open science can align with the commercial goals of running a biotech startup. Open science, advocating for accessible research stages, is transforming scientific collaboration. This approach is not merely about sharing; it's a catalyst for transparency and accelerated scientific achievements. The intriguing aspect is how this openness blends with the profit-driven biotech startups. They can, in fact, coexist beautifully with a few conditions: • Open science should encourage collaborations, spurring discoveries. • There must be a focus on quality, vital for research integrity, trust and reliability. • Interests must be balanced such that legal frameworks can protect commercial interests while fostering open science. This will invite investments, leading to swift advancements. Did you know that KIC DC's Bio I-Corps-Tech Lean Innovation Program is a three-year initiative dedicated to facilitating the soft landing of Korean biotech startups in the US market? Over the course of three years, the participating Korean startups undergo training, workshops, and consulting sessions, with the goal of establishing their business in the US by the program's conclusion. The year 2023 marked the completion of the program for Myo-Tec-Sci, NeuroEars, RUDACURE, and STEMDEN. Throughout the program, these innovative Korean startups expanded their US investor network, secured new rounds of investments, established partnerships with leading corporations and universities, and recruited new talent to advance their technologies. These teams also visited Washington, DC last November to participate in Defy Conference, where they had the opportunity to meet potential investors and customers.
