December 21, 2023 marked the end of a chapter that began four years ago, and as I turn the page, I'm excited to start a new, longer one. Reflecting on this journey, I can confidently say that I've had an incredible time. My journey to becoming a licensed Aeronautical Engineer have not only been about academic growth, but also about discovering more about who I am. They say that our early twenties are a time of transitioning into adulthood. While I may not feel completely ready to tackle all of life's challenges, I can say with certainty that I've undergone significant personal development. Let me share some of the most profound lessons I've learned during this time in a HEART acrostic. Happiness. One of the most important lessons I've learned is the significance of finding happiness in every moment. Empathy. Being part of a diverse and dynamic group of fellow students taught me the value of empathy and understanding. Ambition. I discovered that Aeronautical engineering, with its intricate concepts and innovative ideas, was amazing and that fueled my ambition and pushed me to dream bigger. Relations. The friendships and connections I forged during these years are some of the most cherished aspects of my journey. Time. Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons I learned is the importance of time management. I now understand that time is a limited resource, and how we choose to allocate it determines our accomplishments and overall satisfaction. As I look forward to more opportunities in the field of aviation, I do so with a HEART full of gratitude for the experiences and lessons that have shaped me. I am pleased to share a special announcement from Karl Rein-Weston The AIAA PNW Section is looking for volunteers who have an interest in providing wisdom and ideas to help guide the section in implementing efficient practices that are meaningful to its members. Please bring your experience and leadership to this group. Please PM me for Karl’s email and phone number if interested. In addition to this announcement, there are two other AIAA events coming up. Please check out 16th Pacific Northwest AIAA Technical Symposium that will be held on Saturday April 20 at the Lynnwood Event Center. The program features three keynotes and twelve topical technical sessions. If you are interested in participating in this one-day event, please click on this link for more details and you will see the “register button” about ¾ way down the page: https://lnkd.in/gF_fm67b Although I'm not a member of AIAA, I've had the privilege of advertising their enriching events and hosting 5 students from Raisbeck Aviation High School for each breakfast event. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to gain insights from seasoned industry veterans and broaden their horizons. The AIAA retiree talks are open to all, providing a wonderful platform for learning and networking. If you’re interested in aerospace, consider joining us at the next event on May 11th, 2024. The focus will be on two Capstone Projects and the work done in each by senior students at the University of Washington. These projects cover a 24-week multidisciplinary design requirement as a part of the degree in Aerospace. One project involves configurations of supersonic transport airliners operating at low speeds, and the other investigates how deployable an AeroTec drone system can be. Please consider helping these senior students who are eager to hear your feedback and recommendations. To register, click here if attending either via Zoom or in-person at the Museum of Flight: https://lnkd.in/gp2b9ubQ AIAA looks forward to your support of these students. #AerospaceEngineering #AIAA #CommunityEngagement #Mentorship #RaisbeckAviationHighSchool

Landon Cone, an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University undergraduate student participated in the ERAU Discovery Day. This project aims to delve into the dynamics of teamwork within Part 121 and Part 135 operations, particularly in light of accidents often attributed to human error and breakdowns in teamwork despite stringent regulations. By analyzing past incidents, the research seeks to gain insights into the functioning of teamwork within these operational hierarchies. Ultimately, the goal of this study is to identify strategies that can enhance collaboration and decision-making processes by professional pilots, thereby contributing to improved safety outcomes in aviation operations.

I'm honored to be featured in this article by my alma mater, University of Brighton. Reflecting on my journey, I'm reminded of the incredible support and opportunities I received during my time there. To me, inspiring the next generation of engineers means fostering a spirit of curiosity, resilience, and innovation. It's about creating environments where young minds can thrive, challenge the status quo, and make meaningful contributions to our world. As I reflect on my career in Airbus, I realize the importance of mentorship and sharing knowledge. Stay Curious: The world of engineering is ever-evolving. Embrace lifelong learning and stay curious about new technologies and methodologies. Embrace Challenges: Every problem is an opportunity to innovate. Don’t shy away from difficult projects; they often lead to the most rewarding breakthroughs. Collaborate: Engineering is a team effort. Value the perspectives and skills of your peers, and remember that collaboration often leads to the best solutions. Give Back: Share your knowledge and experiences. Whether through mentorship, teaching, or community projects, giving back helps build a stronger, more vibrant engineering community. I am excited to continue contributing to the field and inspiring future engineers to dream big and achieve great things. If you want to listen to my conversation with the great guys at No U-Turn Podcast my episode is out.
Check out the latest episode with Leah Whitfield, C.M., ACE, President of the The Aviation Planning Group, who joins us this week to share her story in aviation and airports: - Leah shares her journey from a farm in Kentucky to becoming a meteorologist and air traffic controller, with education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and an internship in weather forecasting for shuttle launches. - The transition to air traffic control was driven by Leah's interest in aviation, math, and problem-solving, with radar classes being particularly engaging, and an age cutoff for training set at 31. - Leah, as a young airport manager, emphasized the importance of political acumen in managing a small airport, where she gained diverse skills from handling projects to working with consultants. - The gender dynamics in aviation education and the industry were discussed, highlighting the low ratio of women in engineering at Embry-Riddle and the importance of mentorship for young female professionals. - We explored aviation innovations, such as electric and hybrid-electric aircraft, drone delivery infrastructure, and improving passenger experiences, with the team sharing their airport preferences and pet peeves. Until next time, keep it on the centerline! Basil Yap, Ravi H. Just returned from an incredible event that reaffirmed my passion for engineering, and I'm excited to share my team's achievements! Last week, I had the honor of being part of Team 77, representing Rowan University at the Spaceport America Cup ran by Experimental Sounding Rocket Association. Despite having one of the smallest budgets and in-person teams (just six of us), we brought unparalleled energy, enthusiasm, and a love for rocketry. We faced numerous challenges, including almost every part of our rocket breaking in the week leading up to and during the event. However, we banded together, persevered, and made Rowan Rocketry history. We became the first team to launch a rocket to a scoreable height (the competition target was 10,000 feet, and scoreable is 7,000 feet—we hit just over 7,000) and recover it 100% intact. Nothing felt better than witnessing our launch on the final day of the event after historic weather delays. Huge thanks to my incredible team that attended Beth Kraus Aidan Sharpe Zachary Pedrick Rowen Christianson and Christian Hanlon (a even bigger thank you to our Project Manager Zach Pedrick), those in the clinic who couldn't attend, and our advisors Dr. John Schmalzel and Dr. Nand Kishore singh. Engineering is the ultimate team endeavor, and sometimes it takes an army to reach your goals, but today we proved that you can achieve ANYTHING you set your mind to. Aim high and reach higher, Profs! 🦉 #Engineering #Rocketry #Teamwork #Innovation #RowanUniversity #SpaceportAmericaCup #STEM #StudentEngineers #Aerospace #Success #Persistence #GoalAchievement #EngineeringStudents #RocketScience #WomenInSTEM #FutureEngineers #TechInnovation
