For this #MentorMonday: who has been a key mentor in your life and career? What’s the biggest lesson they taught you? I love this post by below by Robert F. Smith on the power and importance of #mentoring (and am inspired by the work his foundation is supporting). It also reminds me of the importance of this work that we are doing in the Forbes newsroom (led by my colleague ali jackson-jolley). Personally, I can reflect back and think about many different mentors I’ve had - people like Miles Alexander, Lynn Schusterman, Sandy Cardin, Elizabeth Fisher and others who have reminded me to always be courageous with my ideas. Who are your mentors and what have they taught you? ( Tag them and tell them! #ForbesBLK #mentoringmatters #mentors #mentoringprogram #women #womenempowering #womenleadership
I believe that a single conversation can change the trajectory of your #career by leading to a lasting mentorship that can launch you on a path of excellence, personal success and help forge a lifelong connection with a professional in your field. #NationalMentoringMonth was proclaimed a national observance in 2022 and is commemorated annually in January. This observance was established by MENTOR , an organization that advocates to expand mentorship opportunities to a wider array of students and young professionals, in 2002. During this month, it’s important to celebrate those who have helped guide your career and to consider offering mentorship to someone in your industry or network. Throughout my life, I’ve had incredible mentors, such as John Utendahl and Ray McGuire. From my time as an intern at Bell Labs to obtaining my MBA, my mentors helped steer my careers in chemical engineering and in mergers and acquisitions. That is why I’m a staunch advocate for mentorships and work to make sure others can have the profound experience with mentors I was fortunate to have. As founding Director and President of Fund II Foundation, I find it crucial that mentorship opportunities are provided to youth from disenfranchised communities. Fund II Foundation’s Restoration Retreat is one example of how the organization is creating those opportunities to help young people from inner-city neighborhoods thrive both personally and professionally. Additionally, the Foundation developed internXL, an innovative internship matching process that helps students grow professionally. The organization also partnered with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and provided a $48 million grant to support the Fund II Foundation UNCF #STEM Scholars Program. The STEM Scholars Program identifies Black students interested in #STEM fields and provides them with scholarships, internships, mentoring and other resources to help them pursue their interests. And, at Vista Equity Partners (Vista), we know firsthand the power of providing career guidance to those from underserved communities. Our Vista Frontier Fellows Program creates opportunities for undergraduate students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in #privateequity, enterprise software #investing and #finance. A helping hand is all someone may need to succeed and transcend their own expectations.
