#WellnessWednesday 🚨 First Aid Tip 🚨: Food Poisoning Food poisoning can be caused by eating contaminated food or drink (often due to improper cooking). Signs and Symptoms: ▶ Vomiting/nausea ▶ Abdominal pains ▶ Diarrhoea ▶ Fever Common causes include: 1️⃣ Not cooking foods properly 2️⃣ Not adhering to recommended food storage temperatures 3️⃣ Handling of food by someone with poor hygiene/unwell 4️⃣ Cross contamination — spreading of germs between food, surfaces & utensils What to do: ✔ If they are vomiting or in diarrhoea, encourage them to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. ✔ You can use Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) or mix 1 teaspoon of salt & 6 of sugar in 1 litre of clean water and give them. ❌ Don’t use anti-diarrheal medication unless advised so by a doctor. B.cereus, short for Bacillus cereus, is a gram positive bacterium commonly found in a vast number of environments. Some of these environments include soil, food, and sometimes, the human gastrointestinal tract. It is known to cause food poisoning and can produce toxins in certain conditions, emphasizing the importance of food safety measures. Its ability to adapt to its environment allows it to survive in diverse settings, including the human body. B.cereus can be transmitted to the human body through improper food handling, infant formula, environmental exposure and or contaminated food. Some strains of B.cereus produce heat resistant spores that survive cooking and when consumed, it can cause gastrointestinal infections. Food poisoning is not a joke! If you've ever had diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or stomach cramps after eating, you know how rough it can be. Stay hydrated and see a doctor if your symptoms are severe or don't go away. Here are some tips I've learned to prevent food poisoning: - Cook meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs thoroughly. - Avoid raw dough and always wash fruits before peeling. - Keep raw and cooked foods separate. - If you’re pregnant, have young children, elderly family members, or anyone with chronic illnesses, be extra careful with raw or unpasteurized foods. No one wants to deal with nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. If multiple people are feeling unwell after a shared meal, it's possible you're dealing with food poisoning. Food poisoning occurs when harmful bacteria, parasites or toxins are consumed in contaminated food or water. Common culprits are E. coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus. Within hours or days, the microbes multiply in your gut causing unpleasant digestive upset. Proper food safety is key to prevention. Be sure to practice good hygiene, cook foods thoroughly, avoid cross-contamination, and store perishables at the right temps. High-risk foods include - undercooked meats/eggs, - raw produce, - deli foods, - homemade sauces or unpasteurized dairy. Symptoms resemble the stomach flu but usually last 1-2 days for most healthy adults.
