How About: 4 How about if schools taught children to grow plants at home for food. And schools had a dedicated period to learn about growing fruits, greens and vegetables at home in tiny spaces. Students would grow lemons, green chillies, and a variety of plants. They would keep nurturing these plants for years in a small home garden, even if living in an apartment. They would maintain a video blog detailing the journey of how their home gardens evolved, as they learnt new growing and nurturing techniques. And they would be graded on the basis of how they made these home gardens thrive.

Pehchaan The Street School (Trust) Some say that teachers can be thought of as gardeners because they create conditions for students to grow, similar to how gardeners create conditions for plants. Here are some ways teachers can be like gardeners : Planting seeds 🍃 Teachers plant seeds for growth and opportunity every day, such as content, information, skills, or knowledge. Cultivating patience ☘️ Teachers need to focus on small steps and be patient for student growth to lead to success. Creating an environment 🍀 Teachers create an environment that includes physical elements, such as books, tools, and records, as well as emotional elements, such as spiritual, moral, and intellectual elements. Adapting to conditions 🌳 Teachers need to study the environment before planting, customize materials, water seedlings, watch the weather, fertilize, and adapt to changing conditions. Tending to students 🌸 Teachers tend to students, watch them grow, and see their successes and failures. They also worry about students when they are not around and consider what they can give students tomorrow to help them grow.

Read on... --How did Ground Ed get its start?  Ground Ed literally grew right out of the Kinder yard at our kids' elementary school.  A Kinder teach joined us in the excitement of trying to take anything happening in the classroom, outside. The very first garden lessons were to plant, tend, and harvest veggies for the Salad People recipe in the cookbook by the same name from Mollie Katzen. --What’s been the most rewarding part so far? Trusting children.  --What’s a funny thing that happened on the way to the school garden? I took 7 students in a special day class on a walking field trip to a local lagoon and I forgot to check the tides. We were stuck on the far side with no dry path back. We laughed about our predicament and debated our options but not for long because the tide was rising. We decided to take off our shoes and roll up our pants and we all got soaked. We helped each other and had fun making it to a floating bridge where we could get back.  --Do you have a garden at home?  I do! It’s a natural and native plant place that's 1% mine and 99% nature’s.  --When you’re not cultivating school gardens where can we find you?  Daydreaming about the path to a wilder world.
