Halifax’s recent decision to extend its protected bike lane corridor from Morris to University is a major W (win) for all Haligonians, whether they use it or not. By enhancing safety and encouraging more people to walk, wheel, and cycle, the city is taking a meaningful step toward building a healthier, more sustainable community. Increased active transportation means fewer cars on the road, reducing traffic congestion and making commuting smoother for everyone. Fewer vehicles also lead to lower emissions, improving air quality and supporting Halifax’s climate goals, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for all. Ultimately, this infrastructure aims to create a more connected, vibrant city that prioritizes residents’ well-being and fosters a resilient, community-focused urban environment. And for those mayoral candidates who dismiss active transportation infrastructure, they’re ignoring its broad benefits: less traffic, better health, cleaner air, and a more livable city. Old Man’s Valley, part of the Hornsby Park project, will come alive as a vibrant Field of Play thanks to a Thriving Communities grant from the Australian Government.   With over 7,000 square metres of new multipurpose recreational green space it will include:  👉A playing field for a range of recreational activities 👉Accessible amenities, including car parking, bathroom facilities, change rooms, picnic hubs, and a dog exercise area  👉Bike pump track - a circuit track used by mountain bikes and BMX, skateboards and wheelchairs. 👉Activations and cultural events   The project has been provided $12 million, to be matched by Council through development contributions.   Hornsby Park, a major recreation destination, is being created on the site of the former Hornsby Quarry. It will feature approximately 60 hectares of bushland and open space and include features of historical and community interest.   As per the Master Plan adopted in July 2021, Hornsby Park will be delivered in stages. Vegetation clearance works planned for Malakoff boundary wall on 11 and 12 December Works to clear vegetation on the boundary wall around the Malakoff are planned to take place on Wednesday, 11 and Thursday, 12 December, weather permitting. The clearance, which is being carried out by Cormac on behalf of Cornwall Council, will enable the structure of the wall to be inspected ahead of the construction of the Town Deal funded scheme to improve the Malakoff open space area later next year. Up to 10 spaces in the Station car park will be closed during the two days to provide a safe working space for the team. Part of the St Ives Low Carbon Transport Strategy, which aims to reduce the impact of vehicles on St Ives and introduce measures that encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport, the proposed scheme at the Malakoff includes realigning the bus stop with provision of a bus shelter and information point, enhancing the gardens and providing additional seating. Further public consultation on the final proposals for the scheme will take place in early 2025, with construction currently due to begin in mid-March.

Guy Gowing, Senior Partner says: “This is a very significant deal that reinforces a trend that we have seen for leisure businesses to repurpose former industrial buildings. With an interior height of up to 6.8 metres, we recognised the potential of this building beyond its former industrial use, and worked proactively to find an occupier which would make the most of its potential." This marks the second similar deal completed on Whiffler Road as more leisure-focused enterprises are moving into previously industrial or retail spaces across Norwich. Mike Surtees, Managing Director of Highball Climbing Centre stated: "We are thrilled to finally have the keys to Unit 7, 5 Whiffler Road and have already started work on site. We had been looking for a new building for over five years and this new location ticked all the boxes in terms of size, location, transport links, and parking. We are currently based on Fifers Lane, but after almost 13 years of trading, our existing facilities were becoming tired and the industry has moved on so much since 2012.
