Evolution of Architecture in the Philippines The history of architecture in the Philippines is a rich tapestry woven through centuries of colonization and cultural exchange. From the majestic churches and forts built by the Spanish colonizers to the modern skyscrapers and eco-friendly designs of today, Filipino architecture tells the story of a resilient nation that has continually adapted to changing times. Spanish Colonization: The Birth of the Baroque When the Spanish arrived in the Philippines in the 16th century, they brought with them their architectural style influenced by the Baroque and Renaissance periods. The most prominent examples of Spanish colonial architecture in the Philippines are the churches built across the archipelago, such as the San Agustin Church in Manila and the Church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Iloilo. The Spanish also built forts and government buildings, such as Fort Santiago in Manila and Intramuros, the walled city that served as the capital during the Spanish colonial period. "We like it quaint and inviting, so it always feels like a home." Man, this Southern Urbanism piece really drives home the alienation we experience on our streets. I live in a small southern town (albeit a growing one), and the last phrase I'd use to describe most of our roads is "like home." I suspect I'm not alone -- though maybe I'm in a fishbowl amongst my #completestreets colleagues. What would it mean for our mobility network to design our sidewalks, bikeways, streets, and roads "to always feel like home?" But our planning efforts -- and the designs that follow from them -- so often use goals like "improve reliability" or "reduce congestion." Not that those aren't important, but are they goals...or outputs? We do our communities a disservice by not setting goals like "increases public trust," "permits everyone to move with dignity," or "feels like home." Are they less measurable? Sure. But they register to us as people. And it's people on our streets everyday, not just cars, or bikes, or buses, or data points.
What exactly is Southern Urbanism? And what makes our region unique? Architect Louis Nequette explains. https://loom.ly/AD-iEsg

Why Herese ? It takes the essence of the word Heritage, from Latin heres, heir. In a general and figurative sense, inheritance is everything that is passed on from generation to generation. Heritage weaves the past into the present, illuminating our path to the future. Every project should be thought of not only from the past to the present, but as a reflection of the future. At Herese, we promised ourself to take care of all these places full of history, and to treat them like persons with uniques personalities. Like vernacular architecture embodies the spirit of local culture and tradition, the spaces we create reflect the unique history and lifestyle of their localisation. This approach not only fosters sustainability but also creates a profound sense of place, connecting the past with the present in a harmonious blend of elegance and functionality where each element is meticulously curated. We need to unveil the potential of every project. We need to take care and enrich tomorrow’s heritage.
