When it comes to Personal Statements on CVs the jury is out as to whether these are necessary, desirable or a complete waste of time. I, personally, like them. They help me get a sense of the person behind the CV. However, if you're writing a personal statement my strong recommendation is you make it meaningful and relevant to the job for which you're submitting your CV. Bland, generic full-of-cliche personal statements are meaningless and a waste of precious space on your CV. If you can't write a few (4 at the most) sentences detailing why you're the best person for the job, then don't write anything at all. Not sure what to write? Start with these: WHO YOU ARE: * Recent Massey / Wintec grad... looking for..... * Experienced Companion Animal vet with an interest in...... WHAT YOU CAN OFFER THE EMPLOYER: * list a couple of your top skills + evidence of these * make sure the skills you've listed match those they're looking for. WHAT YOUR CAREER GOALS ARE: * I'm looking to be part of....... * I'm looking to further my career so I can develop my ....... Yes, job descriptions take time and effort. And yes, they can seem bureaucratic. But with more #CdnAg farms going multi-generational, and more farmers hiring employees, job descriptions ensure that the right people are doing the right jobs. They also decrease conflict in the workplace, resulting in better relationships between both family and non-family employees and managers. If job descriptions sound like a waste of time to you, check out this article by Helen Lammers-Helps to learn about their advantages and tips for crafting great job descriptions. What was the most random job you did before finding your future career path? 🌻 For me, it was selling pick your own Sunflowers in a field in Kent. Surprisingly, it turned out to be the best paid job for the effort I put in. Not only did I earn well, but I also gained numerous transferable skills and a practical understanding of basic business concepts during that time. Here's how it unfolded: 🚀 Initially hired to farm sunflowers for oil, a sudden buyer dropout led to a pivot towards a new sales opportunity - after all who doesn't want sunflowers on their kitchen table? 🚀 A chance encounter with a professional photographer in the quiet field led to a viral photo sold to UK broadsheet newspapers. Demand skyrocketed, and we were flooded with visitors eager to pick sunflowers. 🚀 With a commission-based pay structure, the unexpected success of the venture resulted in a lucrative job that summer. 🚀 Despite challenges like lack of rain and heavy foot traffic depleting supply, I impressed my employer with reliability, energy, and self-motivation, securing another role on-site. Share your own unique job experience below to inspire students and recent graduates. Remember, valuable skills and enjoyable opportunities can come from unconventional paths! #ownyourstory #careerjourney #randomjobs #thetalentlighthouse #thetalenttribe
