As we get closer to the election this November (108 days, not that I’m counting), I’m starting to see more of the usual talking points aimed at moms of younger kids around GOTV. You know, the ones that talk about bringing your kids with you to vote… how it’s a great civic experience for kids,… a bonding moment for mom,… instills responsibility,…. your vote is important so even though schools close and you have a job and now your kids and and and — MAKE SURE YOU VOTE! I’m not going to say any of those statements are wrong, but I am going to say that the part where all this is aimed *completely* at moms should be telling. We’re not asking dads to add yet another thing to their plate, we’re asking *moms*. When people ask why Politisit ‘s Childcare for Voters program is needed if we don’t have lots of data to say moms aren’t voting because a lack of affordable childcare is a barrier to the ballot box, it’s almost ALWAYS followed with some statement about how great it is for kids to go to the polls with mom. We don’t have data because no one is asking. We don’t have data because moms — especially Black mamas and moms of color — just make shit happen. But what if we could make it easier? We can. www.politisit.org/donate

Picture this: You’re already balancing work, life, and a toddler who thinks crayons are a food group. Now add voting to the mix! Long lines, impatient kiddos, and privacy concerns—because nothing says ‘empowerment’ like explaining your ballot choices to a curious 4-year-old. Let’s give moms a break and find better ways to rock the vote — like our Childcare for Voters program! Want to be helpful instead of echoing the chorus of ‘just do more’? So glad you all are doing this. Voting requires some focus & attention, particularly when the ballots are longer & the stakes are higher; even if you’ve researched your ballot & all candidates in advance, marking the form accurately when you have a helper with you can be a challenge.
