Nature is declining globally at an unprecedented rate. 🌏📉 According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, more than 44,000 species are threatened with extinction. 🦥🦋🐧🌿 Humans receive many socio-economic benefits from wildlife. Biodiversity, endangered species conservation and the protection of ecosystems are central to sustainable development. Wildlife and biodiversity are generally threatened by the same issues that threaten sustainable development – land degradation, deforestation, pollution and climate change. Done well, Biodiversity Net Gain could help restore struggling wildlife and give communities access to more nature spaces 🏞️ Rules coming into force on 12th February (that new developments must ensure 10% net gain in nature) set the bar too low. Government has been warned that this will barely offset the nature lost to development projects🥀 But some local authorities are keen to go beyond this, with analysis by Wildlife & Countryside Link revealing the places where net gain of up to 30% is being aimed for. To give tigers a fighting chance, we need to: 🌳 Restore forests and ecosystems to preserve their habitats 🔴 Stop illegal hunting and trafficking of wildlife 🐅 Secure corridors so the species remain connected Conserving biodiversity and ecosystems is crucial #ForOurPlanet. In 2022, European unity and leadership were essential in adopting the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #BiodiversityPlan, which aims to mobilize at least USD 200 billion per year for biodiversity by 2030.
