Cyclists don’t always get the treatment they deserve at temporary works. A sign essentially asking them not to use the road isn’t the answer. We like the new scoring approach for the Newport Bermuda Race, which relies on the wind and current forecast at the start. The system is simple and relies on technologies that have become mainstream. It feels intuitive, is a natural extension of VPP rules, and still requires competitors to evaluate what course is theoretically fastest vs. what's actually about to happen on the course ahead of them. Best of all, competitors can know whether they are ahead or behind in real time. Everyday normal things we do that can be fatal: 1- Leaning on an electrical lighting pole 2- Touching the dryer/washer while they are running 3- Swimming in a pool with underwater lights Next time, please think twice before doing those activities. TendOcean™ remote-sinking VDSB completes tests at WHOI A shortened version of our Variable Displacement Spar Buoys (VDSB) has been successfully tested in Casco Bay, Maine, and now in the test tank at WHOI. An r.f. link commands sinking and its submerged duration. This remote capability will be an option for TendOcean LLC's future 16' and 19' buoys. Intended primarily to sink the farm at the approach of sever weather, it's utility in depth cycling will be tested as a way to improve growth rates. https://lnkd.in/em7dQUW3

This aerial footage highlights the pitfalls of on-road painted lanes for cyclists in our cities. How many vehicles disregard the cycling infrastructure?  93% of Melbourne’s existing cycling infrastructure consists of similar narrow on-road painted lanes. A recent Monash Uni study on barriers to bike riding in Melbourne identified the greatest enabler to encourage more cycling was having a bike-lane physically separated from motor vehicle traffic or an off-road bike path (66% of respondents). Orca’s bike lane separators are a great example of separated cycling infrastructure. This local innovation is made in Australia and contains up to 80% recycled glass content. For many years now, the Jacobite Steam Train (more recently loved by a new generation of fans as the Harry Potter Hogwarts Express) has been running between Fort Willam and Mallaig in the West of Scotland. The operator of the service West Coast Railway Company Ltd has done a really impressive job of marketing and developing the service and it now makes a material contribution to the local economy and according to some, to the national economy as well for which they deserve plenty of plaudits. Currently however, the Jacobite Steam Train is not running and ticket sales are suspended until further notice. The reason? A row over the safety of so called slam doors on heritage coaches which the rail safety regulator is insisting are fitted with a central door locking ("CDL") system that prevents passengers from opening the doors once it is activated. This is not the nerdy issue that it might first appear. For some, it is clear evidence of the creeping nanny state, of health and safety gone mad and a failure of officialdom to accept that people have far more common sense than they are given credit for - and if they do do something stupid, well that's their own fault. The opposing view is that this requirement has been known about for years (the genesis of these regulations go back to 1999), then in 2019 the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) gave almost 4 years notice of the final deadline of March 2023 to have to fit CDL, and as a result, other heritage train operators just got on and fitted it. The stakes are high and the positions adopted by all parties appear increasingly resolute yet opposing. On the latest episode of Green Signals, Nigel Harris and I discuss and explain the background to what is going on and why it really matters how this situation develops and is resolved. We also look at the emerging conclusions of Andy Street's and Andy Burnham's joint effort to deal with mess created by the Prime Minister's unilateral decision to cancel HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd north of Birmingham. But we also ask whether we need to rediscover the role of the incremental and smaller schemes that whilst not as game changing as HS2 would have been can still nonetheless deliver some material improvements to services and to the lives of those who use them. Oh, and Nigel and I nearly have a fit of the giggles at one point. All in all, a jolly interesting week.
