One of my favorite things to do is to visit the Asbury Communities, Inc. campuses and instruct our “Best in Class” training series to our Well-being and Activities teams. This ensures a consistent knowledge base and application of principles across all levels of care, system-wide. It’s done in-person with lots of group interaction (old school!). Six topics are being covered this year. Current topic: Exercise that Matters!

WHY YOU NEED TO DO MORE ABOUT VOCABULARY.... I had a great afternoon in Cheshire including delivering my school training on 'the Joy of Words'. This is one of my favourite things that I do, and it always gets people fascinated. In fact it even got the taxi driver who took me from station to school intrigued, and we discussed one of the sections from my training which is about how children can be confused by multiple meanings of the same word. As teachers we need to be much more aware of this. I discussed 'pitch' with the taxi driver and he talked about a roof. So a roof is something that you can put pitch ON but is is also something that a roof HAS. We also talked about something being 'pitch black' when the pitch that most pupils know will be green... This is why it is so important to check pupils' understanding of words and to teach them specific skills to use when faced with unfamiliar or confusing ones. My training on this can be done online or in-house and is relevant to all types of school; it sets you up for making some small but important tweaks in teaching habits that can have a lifetime of impact. Training adults must have value now and add value then.

Give “a man” a fish, and feed him today; Teach “him” how to fish, and feed him for life. Continuous training and personal development should be the mantra of everyone upon leaving the normally mandated school programmes around the world. However this often comes at a personal cost (sorry, investment). And when that leads to choices, training is often sacrificed. Why? We’ll think of it this way - when you’re up to your eyes in alligators, it’s often easy to forget the objective was to drain the swamp.
