As a Mum of 3, I’ve so far been through two Grade 6 graduations, where the excitable kids are required to tell their peers and an assembly hall full of parents what they plan to do with their futuristic careers.
It’s always an eye-opening affair.
Generally speaking, the professional ambitions, hopes and dreams on display from these young ‘uns are, well, let’s just say, lofty.
Based on what I’ve heard, each individual year will produce (but not be limited to) at least 50 professional AFL players (including my middle kid), 10 anaesthetists (!?), a “class of doctors” (the corrective collective noun), and a smattering of Oscar winners.
Don’t get me wrong! I’m not bagging the dreams!
LOVE the ambition! Go get’ em, Kids!
But here’s the thing… Of the roughly 250 kids who have filed past me boldly declaring “what they wanna be when they grow up”, not a single one of them has said “A MARKETER!”
So, what gives?
Is Marketing not “cool” to the kids?
Or are the kids now “down” with Marketing?
Or… Are young people not hearing about Marketing until they’re a few more years advanced?
OR… Do they hear about Marketing from their parents, and conclude that “it doesn’t quite make sense, so I’ll be a vet instead!”
Whatever it is, I’m calling for more marketer Parents out there to spruke our wonderful industry and influence more mini-Marketers, junior-Creatives, and juvenile-Designers to consider a career in what we do!
(Do they not realise we’re world changers???)
So, look, I’ll do my part as well.
I still have one Grade 6 graduation to go through.
He currently wants to be an airline pilot.
But I reckon I can talk him round. 😆
