Regional Deputy Director, UKHSA Professor of Public Health, University of Sheffield Editor-in-chief, Public Health, RSPH
I had the wonderful honour of speaking at #ArabHealth2024 together with IANPHI president Prof Duncan Selbie, Maj Gen Dr Aamer Ikram & Sadaf Lynes, MBA, MSc Public Health, sharing insights from IANPHI's study on #IntegratedDiseaseSurveillance & advocating for an evolution towards #CollaborativeSurveillance globally. Surveillance systems are more than just about the hardware and IT infrastructure. They are complex. Surveillance systems have to be tailored to local needs and contexts - there is no universal "one-size-fits-all" model that will suit all countries and there is no perfect solution. Each system will have its strengths but also its limitations. Whilst the integration of surveillance systems can help, what is also important is the integration of minds - bringing together data and epidemiologists together in communities of practice - where intelligence and insights can be shared, problems solved together, and for peer-to-peer learning. Strong and trusted networks amplify the value of surveillance. This is needed at all levels from local to global. In this regard, there's a key role for National Public Health Institutes in leading the development of surveillance systems, fostering learning cultures and nurturing these communities of practice. One key function of disease surveillance is about getting timely data for public health action. Better surveillance enables better informed public health decisions and response to health threats, and ultimately contributes to greater health security for communities and populations.
