As we all celebrate Black History Month, we encourage all to reflect on the true meaning of the word “history” and what this month symbolizes. When we study history, we learn how we got where we are and why we live the way we do. It's the study of us—of humans and our place in an ever-changing world. Without it, we wouldn't understand all of our triumphs and failures and we would continually repeat patterns without building forward to something better. To say we celebrate diversity is one step. But at Solera we encourage all to take a step further and to seek to understand events that seem like dates on a page yet have been turning points in the story of our societies. Reflect on the past, amplify the present, and pave the way for a more inclusive future. #historymattersforourfuture

October marks #BlackHistoryMonth in the UK, and I am totally against this celebration. Here’s why: The name is temporal isolation: Just as we don’t have, for example, a Jewish History Month or an Anglo-Saxon History Month, dedicating only one month to celebrating Black history reinforces the idea that this recognition is a one-off, rather than an integral part of the historical narrative. Black history should be valued and taught throughout the year. By focusing discussions on specific events (or for a specific time, as is the case here), we run the risk of ignoring the everyday experience of Black people, their struggles and current challenges, which also deserve attention and action. Worse than that, companies and institutions often focus on symbolic initiatives during Black History Month, without promoting structural changes that truly combat racism and promote racial equity on an ongoing basis. The celebration ends up being appropriated for commercial purposes, emptying its original meaning and transforming a moment of awareness into a marketing strategy, without a real commitment to racial causes. I invite you to rethink Black History Month to ensure that it is not just a date on the calendar, but part of a larger, more consistent effort to promote racial equity and social justice. #BlackHistoryMonth #RacialEquity #BlackHistory #Diversity #SocialJustice
