Good behind the scenes look at how Chemistry, a $350m venture fund, was raised by Mark Goldberg Kristina Shen Ethan Kurzweil. What surprised me was the speed at which a first time fund was raised (Just 3 months; over the US summer!). Thanks to podcast episodes like this from The Twenty Minute VC (and the Venture Unlocked series - there was a recent one on Saga Ventures which was good) you get a glimpse into the mechanics of VC fundraising (from LPs), which is otherwise hard for someone like me sitting in India to get deets into. What I found interesting re fundraising - fundraising wrapped in 3 months, but then this was a high pedigree team / spin out from elite funds - they did 100 LP meetings, and qualifed LPs by whether they had invested in first-time managers over the past 2 yrs (everything is enterprise sales!) - closed at $350m from ~20 LPs; no one over 10% - The best GPs were the ones who gave direct constructive feedback. - Most common reason for no, was the 3 of you have not worked together. - And this was interesting - LPs told them that most funds are at least 15 yrs, not 10 yrs. 📈 Unlocking Angel Investing: What to Know About the Accredited Investor Status For the past ~18 months I've run Auxo Angels on the side of Auxo Partners. It's an angel syndicate where we invest in a select few of our favorite early-stage companies, and as LPs in our favorite VC funds (+ a few later stage opportunities here and there). Last month I opened Auxo Angels up to a broader audience for the first time, but you'd still need to be an accredited investor. To be an accredited investor, you must meet ONE of these criteria: 💰 Individual income over $200k/year (or $300k joint) 📊 Net worth of $1M+ (excluding primary residence) 👩🎓 Hold specific financial licenses (Series 7, 65, or 82) - this was just added in 2020 Why does this matter? The SEC created this designation to protect investors from high-risk startup investments (though there's been debate recently as to the degree of protection provided vs. exclusion from wealth creation). The sun is shining in London, I'm settling down into a new home, and VC building is calling... Anyone interested in finding out how a new GP thinks about a new VC fund?
