Empirically Speaking’s Post

Thanks Air Combat Command, this is a well put together education video - short and sweet - for motorcyclists, boating and firearm safety. Even though this is listed for the 101 days of summer, these rules are applicable any time. I have added some of my own tips to supplement this. All are detailed below: Fire Arms: ====== If you have a weapon inside the home - make sure you practise proper safe storage. Ensure the ammo is stored in a separate location. Gun safes vary significantly. Be sure to get expert advice if you have kids around or there is a liklihood your house will be broken into. Your gun could be used in a murder or robbery and you may end up taking the blame! The following info. is incorrect: Ammunition that is stored in the boxes sold by the manufacturer is not dangerous in a fire. If ignited by intense heat, the brass or plastic cartridge will burst. The fun video testing ammo in a house fire alerts you to the fact that ammo boxes are insufficient. Better storage is needed. https://shorturl.at/0sT5G Boating: ===== Never operate a boat or go swimming if you have been drinking alcohol Always wear a life vest even if you are an experienced swimmer. Be sure to check the weather before you go out on the boat. Have a whistle and, or flares to be able to alert someone if you find yourself in trouble. Know how to use it before you go. Make sure your life vest fits! If you are knocked out and in the water you want it to save your life. Ideally the vest will have a whistle attached to it. If not invest in one and ensure it is strongly tied on. Know how to contact the life guard or safety boat if inland. Motorcycling: ========= Wear the proper gear. Get the proper training. Keep to the speed limit/ Never drink and ride. Helmet - full face is best. Don't lend or borrow a helmet - if you do make sure it has never seen an accident or been dropped. It can then be defective. Don't put stickers degrade the outer skin of the helmet. Teach yourself and other drivers - Think Once, Think Twice, THINK BIKE Wear the gear: You can get back protectors - I hear they are excellent. Material: leather is strong (hot in summer), kevlar stronger (good for summer); waxed cotton has least amount of protection and its hot and smells. Boots with shin protector are great. I wish I'd had some which gave ankle support. Gloves made from strong material. I was hit by a London cabbie who snapped my leg with his bumper. I wore the gear and it saved my skin. The crash helmet saved my head! Two different occasions, one was sucked under a truck; the other friend died of severe injuries at the roadside. I watched another slide across the road holding him and his brother up on his hand - the glove wore out but it saved him from a much worse injury. #safety #boatsafety #motorcyclesafety #firearms
