Furlough Day 22: Have Fun Many of us will spend half our life working. One way to continue to enjoy the work that we do is to have fun doing it. Joking with coworkers and customers can bring levity, and often a well-needed, switch up. For fun, I was thinking about the job title that I can use to describe my responsibilities during furlough on a resume. I would love input on a title for all of you based upon the following descriptions: -Planned and prioritized facility and grounds maintenance including coordinating vendors and resources -Transformed domicile into a safer space by eliminating rodent infestation from facility -Managed fleet of 2 vehicles including maintenance and safe operation -Managed finances and credit, including accounts receivable and payable -Directed audio and visuals entertainment in response to request of patrons for maximum enjoyment. -Planned entertainment and coordinated transportion to and from venues -Coordinated meetings with healthcare providers for both human and non-humans including transportation and prescription management So... Chief Operating Officer? General Manager? Please share some other titles that I should use.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW? We were all doing what we do now when we were 10 years old. Kind of… Long before reading resumes, interviewing interns, production prospects, and skilled tradespeople, there was GI Joe. This is what a lobby full of applicants looked like when I was in 4th grade- a red, plastic collector case. Some of the first teams I put together were for backyard rescue missions. Each Joe had a file card with their skill set, personality profile, pay grade, and hobbies. My younger brother and I would read about each action figure and then decide if they were a good fit for the job. A soldier dressed in arctic gear rarely was sent to the desert. However, if they could drive a dune buggy or hack into a Cobra mainframe it was a real plus. Now and then, colleagues and I will chat about when we knew the type of work we wanted to do. Engineers will talk about a remote control car they modified in the 5th grade. I have met a few electricians too, that fixed a toaster during summer break or programmed a garage door opener. It is important that we all look back at when we started down our career path. Reconnecting with what makes our craft satisfying will bring back memories. Many probably started towards the end of elementary school. Be proud of your career and remember where you come from. Job satisfaction is a true blessing. And knowing is half the battle!

It's been 367 days - but who's counting? 😂 - since I logged off from a full time job. My posts about #quitting garner a lot of attention... Here are 3️⃣ things I make an effort to do with a more flexible schedule 1️⃣ Have more meaningful daily conversations (think your interaction with a server, librarian, bus driver, cashier, flight attendant, delivery person, rideshare driver, etc.) Now, I take a little more time for a real response. If my day isn't great I make an authentic comment and I introduce my first name and ask for their name. Being kind shouldn't be hard, but we seem to forget this in America often 🙄 2️⃣ Take the time to write a positive review, not only issues or complaints One of my favorite brands to do this for is Delta Air Lines 🛫 They have a comments & complaints section online. I used to write in when my bags were delayed or there was an issue with the flight. Now, I take extra time for positive reviews too, usually with a flight attendant or ground crew member. If they go the extra mile they deserve a shoutout and recognition. 3️⃣ Read more books I've always been a reader, but now I'm reading more than I have since I was in college. I try to read for 2 hours a day with my phone out of reach and a cup of coffee in hand. Have you been impacted by #layoffs or #quit your job? What do you enjoy doing if you have more free time? I would love to hear from you in the comments! ⬇

I take a handyman approach to the field of experience, bridging the gap between strategic objectives and frontline realities. Experience improves. So does your P&L.
"Today is my first day on the job. They don't tell us anything. They just put us out here." So said the door-to-door salesperson after only 45 seconds of conversation and two basic questions. Sweating in the afternoon Florida sun, walking, knocking, pleading, trying to find residents, any resident, willing to listen, let alone sign up. Two months ago, the corporate brand, with its heavy machinery and sprawling crews, had swept through the neighborhood installing buried fiber optic lines. Then all was quiet for about eight weeks. Suddenly every day now brings a door knock, twice a day on the weekend. There are several observations to me made. I choose to consider the plight of the frontliner and the wonderfully universal statement, "Today is my first day on the job. They don't tell us anything. They just put us out here." No prep, no marketing, no leave behind, no confidence, no purpose. This example is exactly at the core of the Experience Gap. Do you see it? #frontline #experiencegap #experiencehandyman

South Carolina’s Second Chance initiative not only helps create a pathway to employment for returning citizens, it provides employers with a larger pool of skilled workers, as well as hiring incentives, making for a more robust workforce. Graniteville Specialty Fabrics is just one of our many Second Chance success stories. In 2019, the company utilized the Work Opportunity Tax Credit to hire a formerly incarcerated individual, who has since become a valuable member of the team, receiving multiple raises of the last five years of employment. In their own words, the employee is “one of our best performers.” How’s that for a win-win? Learn more about the Second Chance initiative: https://bit.ly/4aAtvQV.
