The Show-Me State is incredibly fortunate to have a central resource for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities seeking higher education. Its name is even easy to remember: #ShowMeCollege.com. ShowMeCollege.com offers tips and advice to everyone researching on inclusive colleges in the United States. You need not be a Missouri resident to peruse their website. Considerations to keep in mind when navigating postsecondary education programs for students with I/DD are: Proximity - Will the college campus be within reasonable distance of your home address? Will your student's commute to work or school be easy or complicated? Accommodations - Will your student live on or off campus? Will academic and communication accommodations be available/encouraged? What if your student uses a wheelchair? Will vocational, socio-emotional, and academic support be provided? Is the program one-size-fits-all or will learning and support be optimized according to my student's abilities? Tuition - Will it be affordable? Are there options for financial aid or scholarships? Will this decision of attending college be sustainable? Communication - Will the support staff be easy to reach if you have concerns or inquiries? Will they consistently keep you in the loop on your student's progress? Your list may be longer. Suffice it to say that it matters where and with whom you partner with when it comes to your student's education, wellbeing, and future. ShowMeCollege.com can help you narrow down your selection and even offer guidelines for expressing your most critical concerns or questions during your search for a college program. 1. Student Council (i.e., by students and for students) has existed in education institutions around the world for a very long time. Appending non-student titles to student council appears oxymoronic to some and de-centers students. 2. “Grow Your Own” student-to-educator pipelines in schools should begin with examining the experiences and needs of ALL the students in the space right now. If the students could work as educators in the existing space right now, would they thrive? Recruitment ≠ retention. What are some additional student-centered sentiments?
