Addressing the Rising Global Challenge of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)! As the world prepares for an aging population, the number of people affected by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is set to increase dramatically. By 2050, an estimated 30.44 million in Asia and millions more across Europe and North America will face this life-altering condition. At Cirrus Therapeutics, cofounded by Dr. Ying Kai Chan Chan and Dr. Andrew Dick, we're at the forefront of pioneering a first-in-class treatment that targets the root causes of AMD through a novel approach involving the IRAK-M protein. Our innovative gene therapy not only addresses multiple pathological pathways but also aims to sustain the health of retinal cells far more effectively than current treatments. Stay tuned as we advance towards clinical trials and beyond. We are committed to transforming the landscape of ocular health and offering new hope to millions. Follow our journey and be part of the future where vision loss is no longer an inevitable part of aging. #vision #AMD #DryAMD #WetAMD #optometry #ophthalmology #healthcare #innovation #science #research #termeerfellow #biotech #STEM

New Medical Article! This is article 1 of a Herpes-based gene therapy treats dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa series. Have you ever plucked loose skin near your nail, ripping off a tiny strip of good skin too? Albeit very small, that wound can be painful. Now imagine that it is not just a little strip that peels off, but an entire sheet. And it does not detach only when pulled, but at the slightest touch. Even a hug opens wounds, even a caress brings you pain. This is life with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), the most severe form of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB)…….. Scinus Cell Expansion B.V. has been recognized as one of the Top Cell And Gene Therapy Company In Europe by Life Sciences Review. SCINUS Cell Expansion not only demonstrates superior efficiency; it also champions sustainability. Conventional methods of stem cell cultivation frequently lead to considerable media wastage, necessitating repetitive harvesting and reseeding into new flasks, discarding media that could still be utilised. In sharp contrast, the SCINUS bioreactor NG introduces a method for refreshing the medium within the same cultural environment. This innovation reduces media consumption by up to 60 percent for the same yield of cells, minimising waste. Such efficiency aligns with broader environmental goals, like those outlined in the European Green Deal, by reducing the overall impact of scientific research on the environment. "Operating within a closed system, the SCINUS Bioreactor NG ensures compatibility with Class C or D cleanrooms. This simplifies operational procedures and significantly diminishes the overall cost of ownership, marking a pivotal departure from the more labor-intensive methods of cell culture." says Michiel Jannink, CEO. The article will also be featured in the forthcoming special print edition on Cell And Gene Therapy 2024. A gene regulating fat storage identified! To identify genetic factors responsible for fat deposition, the researchers analyzed gene expression data from fat tissue compared with other tissue types. The results showed that HSP47, a collagen-specific molecular chaperone, is a significant determinant of body fat levels. “HSP47 is expressed at high levels in fat tissue and increases with obesity and greater food intake; in contrast, its expression level decreases with fasting, exercise, calorie restriction, bariatric surgery, and wasting syndrome,” explains the senior author. “In addition, HSP47 expression correlates closely with fat mass, body mass index, waist circumference, and hip circumference.” Importantly, the researchers found that insulin, a hormone associated with fat storage or fat loss, increases HSP47 expression levels; while conversely, glucocorticoids decrease HSP47 expression levels. In addition, high or low HSP47 expression was linked to high or low body fat levels in both humans and mice. #ScienceMission #ScienceNewsHighlights https://lnkd.in/dYTsKesN
