WHAT WINS DID YOU CELEBRATE LAST WEEK? I asked our Pathology team what went well for them last week, and here are a few of their thoughts: ✅ Early completion of histology slides for one large study. ✅ A large quantity of materials was archived, which freed up storage space in our general Histology area. ✅ One team member persisted in a search and found something that we thought was lost. ✅ A fickle piece of lab equipment cooperated when it was most needed! ✅ Another pathologist provided “great slides” feedback to one of our senior histology technicians! ———————————————— WHY AM I SHARING THIS? I work in a fast-paced research environment, in which there’s a never-ending conveyer belt of work, with long days, tight deadlines, and unplanned extra stuff that throws a spanner into the works literally every day. I bet most of you can relate to much or all of this. It takes a dedicated team with their eye on the mission to come together and do their best to win the week. I’m privileged to be part of one such team. Every weekend, I like to reflect on the wins we had in our department during the past week. It’s easy to focus on the frustrations, the curveballs, or what you didn’t quite check off the To Do list. So I find that a little positive reframing is not just a good reminder of what went well, but also sets me up for a positive start to the new week. I try to remember to share some of these wins here, because it makes them seem more real.

David Cornejo is a long time analytics guru and helped me immensely as I was developing the data science methods detailed in my book on "Dynamic Oracle Performance Analytics". Here's the quote from my blog post on the back story: "Rescue Me, Analytics Guru’s Interestingly, my eldest son was in a PhD program in advanced analytics, and I got to rub elbows on occasion with his cohort analytics gurus and other genius mathematicians.  In conversation, I would bring up my quandary of lack of visibility into these tens of thousands of metrics, but I must admit, I made little progress on solving this quandary until I “cornered” my son on this topic.   He says, “Well, we do this thing called feature engineering and feature selection” [at that time these terms were totally new to me].  With my interest piqued, I said, “Tell me more.”  He went on to explain one of many feature selection methods where it is sometimes easier/convenient to count intervals where a metric value exceeds some threshold, and the metrics that most often exceeded the threshold were likely the key influencers to the performance problem.  I’m still a bit skeptical because now with tens of thousands of metrics, it still going to be difficult to make sense of them all.
