The event covered key topics such as: 📈 Market strategies and policies 🏭 Manufacturing and gigafactories 💡 Battery chemistry and design 🔋 xEV and stationary applications ♻ Lifecycle and sustainability 👷♀️ Workforce development Discussions underscored the urgency of collaboration – both within the EU and across continents – to overcome challenges in raw material supply and workforce dependencies. For the Netherlands, the battery landscape is evolving with significant contributions: ✅ Companies like CarbonX are leading in graphite supply and battery performance innovation. ✅ Initiatives such as the annual Battery Day, organized by BCC-NL, InnovationQuarter and TU Delft, foster knowledge sharing, networking, and alliances essential for the ecosystem. ✅ The Port of Rotterdam is poised to become a critical hub for raw materials and recycling in battery and renewable energy technologies, driven by efforts from ARN, TNO, and others. At Battery Competence Cluster - NL (BCC-NL), we’re proud to be part of this dynamic ecosystem, which supports innovation, strengthens the battery value chain, and connects key players to drive sustainable growth. We're excited to confirm that Hystar has been awarded a grant of up to €26 million from the EU Innovation Fund for the industrial scale, automated production of our world-leading PEM electrolyser stacks. While we're already producing for commercial projects at our Høvik, Norway, location, this grant will enable us to significantly increase capacity to meet the needs of our customers globally. “Our Høvik GW factory demonstrates our commitment to rapidly expanding our European operations and meeting the strong demand for our technology globally," says CEO Fredrik Mowill. Last weeks attendance at the 1st Hy2Move IPCEI General Assembly in Berlin showed again that hydrogen is an upcoming future. Dutch company BLS has received a significant boost of €54.6 million from the European Commission’s Innovation Fund to develop a state-of-the-art “Battolyser” factory in Rotterdam. This innovative product combines the benefits of battery storage with electrolyzer technology, enabling flexible green hydrogen production. With an annual production capacity of 1 GW, the factory will be supported by key partners like the Port of Rotterdam and VDL Automation. It was interesting to visit the Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe 2024 in Hamburg and discuss the expectations for further developing the hydrogen grid in Germany and the hydrogen production.

Looking forward to the Global Summit on Gigafactory Design & Construction and my role as chairman and speaker. The conference covers opportunities to discuss cost-modelling for the construction and operations of gigafactories, global gigafactory expansion and retrofitting, designs of high-efficiency HVAC systems and energy efficient dry rooms.
