Modern slavery is common in several sectors in the UK, but according to data gathered by Unseen UK, the construction sector is in the top three. The widespread use of sub-contracted labour, high turnover of workers, and complex supply chains can all serve to inhibit transparency and increase the risk of labour abuse and exploitation. We recognise that given the scale of this issue, it cannot be addressed by one company alone and so we are pleased to be part of this joint effort to shape a resilient, ethical supply chain. Berkeley Group, Laing O'Rourke, Skanska, Morgan Sindall Group plc, Kier Construction, Galliford Try, VGC Group, Danny Sullivan Group, Randstad, Hays and CarmichaelUK - Civil Engineering & Construction Recruitment have worked in partnership to highlight the everyday reality of victims and demonstrate some of the key signs of labour exploitation for construction site teams to look out for. This film, released as part of Anti-Slavery Week, will be used as part of inductions and training programmes to raise awareness of this issue and thereby increase the chances of exploitative activity being reported. #AntiSlaveryCampaign #SupplyChain #ConstructionEthics #EndExploitation #UKConstruction

Restoring the rail line between Bristol to Portishead could be "fast-tracked", with construction beginning this year and the first trains running by 2027. North Somerset Council leaders have approved measures to start construction - if the government agrees to fund the project. £32m has already been spent on the project which requires about three miles of new track. https://lnkd.in/eG8nmJNu #bristol #train

🌟 Tunnel offers vision for boosting construction skills 🌟 A partnership designed to help overcome training and employment barriers and create a skills legacy linked to the Lower Thames Crossing has launched a training initiative. Highways England has joined forces with Gallagher Group, one of the South East’s premier aggregates, groundworks, civil engineering and property development companies, and Flannery Plant Hire, a leader in UK plant supply and skills bootcamp training, to create the Lower Thames Crossing Skills Hub pilot. Speaking at the launch, Lord Blunkett said: “It’s no secret there is a national shortage of skills across the country which poses a significant challenge to economic growth. The Lower Thames Crossing Skills Hubs will break down barriers to opportunity by tackling skills shortages today, and by forging a pathway to a high-skills economy, and resilient future for the construction industry in Kent, Essex, and the region.” Read the full story - https://buff.ly/3AaeKaS #JoinusinKent

“The Government needs to invest in training and outreach now to Get Britain Building.” With 250,00 additional construction workers needed by 2028, inspiring a new generation of workers on the vast opportunities it presents has never been more crucial. Mark Cuttriss (MCIOB, MCIArb), Director at PAH, recently shared his thoughts with Brit Build on how a long term national strategy to train young people in green skills would address shortages in the UK construction industry. An NDP program to improve training for construction workers and expand opportunities for women and Indigenous Peoples has led to exploding costs and delays for major public projects, some industry groups say, reported The Vancouver Sun. "Announced in 2018 by then premier John Horgan, the program, known as the community benefits agreement, requires workers on certain projects to join one of 19 unions under the umbrella of the Allied Infrastructure and Related Construction Council. It also includes rules about the percentage of apprentices, women and Indigenous workers that need to work on the project." "Chris Atchison, the president of the British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA), says the requirements have been a key reason for cost overruns of between $350 million and $500 million on major projects like the Pattullo Bridge replacement and the Broadway subway. The NDP disagrees, saying the reasons for cost overruns are inflation and labour shortages, not its rules about unions." https://lnkd.in/gRcbe9Qy #britishcolumbia #construction #infrastructure #costs #union

What can we do to help a wider range of people into the construction industry? With the new government focus on getting Britain building, construction offers the potential for a strong career with a good salary and a huge variety of roles. Getting people trained in the right skills that are needed by the industry is one hurdle. But before we even get there, we need to ask – who’s in the room? Who else can we help into these roles? How do we ensure that everyone feels they can get involved? And what skills training can we provide to support long-term employment when they get there? UK-based #CIOB members may be aware that the King’s Speech was delivered today, setting out the new government's priorities. In one sense, talk of housebuilding and #construction was front and centre in the speech, with the phrase “get Britain building” heard in the first minute or so. However, there’s a lack of detail on support for the breadth of the industry so it can fully contribute to delivering more homes – and an important element should be a focus on closing the skills and people gap in construction. As covered in our manifesto, the skills gap is persistent and likely to grow without meaningful intervention. The government’s priorities, as outlined today, are most likely to be delivered successfully if we recruit more people into this important industry, in which we can offer interesting, purpose-driven and long-term careers. It was heartening, however, to hear “high quality” as a specific requirement in delivery of houses and infrastructure. Quality and safety and tackling the skills gap have been CIOB priorities for some time and we look forward to working with policymakers, parliamentarians and our sister professional bodies to support the sector and deliver the high-quality built environment that benefits us all.
